Rock in Rio
Rock in Rio is a rock music festival that has taken place seven times in Rio de Janeiro , seven times in Lisbon and three times in Arganda del Rey , near Madrid . The festival premiered in Las Vegas in May 2015.
Rock in Rio 1985
The music festival first took place from January 11th to January 20th of 1985 and was attended by over 1.3 million people. Back then, the promoter Roberto Medina was able to sign some of the most commercially successful rock and metal bands such as Queen , AC / DC , Scorpions , Iron Maiden and Whitesnake . Apart from the so-called music groups, the artists Tina Turner , Ozzy Osbourne , Yes , The B-52’s , Go-Go’s , Nina Hagen , George Benson , James Taylor , Rod Stewart , Al Jarreau and numerous Brazilian acts such as Gilberto Gil and Alceu also performed Valença on.
The performance of the band Queen was seen by over 300,000 viewers and was released in the same year under the title Live in Rio on VHS and Laserdisc .
Rock in Rio II 1991
After Rock in Rio was a success in 1985, the Rock in Rio II music festival took place in 1991. This time, artists such as Guns N 'Roses , George Michael , Billy Idol , Queensrÿche , New Kids on the Block and Prince appeared; thus also musicians who are not primarily assigned to the genre of rock music and metal . Rock in Rio III 2001
Only after ten years was another rock festival held in Rio de Janeiro. The motto of the 2001 festival was Rock in Rio por um Mundo Melhor (“Rock in Rio for a better world”). It offered a more mixed selection of musical acts: In addition to Rob Halford , Queensrÿche and Red Hot Chili Peppers , Britney Spears , * NSYNC , REM and Foo Fighters also took part. Iron Maiden played in front of 250,000 spectators in 2001, but Guns N 'Roses played in front of even more spectators.

Lisbon 2004
The fourth festival took place in 2004. For the first time, however, it was not Rio de Janeiro that served as the venue, but Lisbon . The commercial trend of previous festivals continued and this time the headliners included Metallica , Slipknot , Black Eyed Peas , Britney Spears, Evanescence , Paul McCartney and Peter Gabriel . More than 386,000 people visited the City of Rock over the six days of the festival.
Lisbon 2006
From May 25th to June 4th the second edition of the Rock-in-Rio music festival took place again in Lisbon. This time the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns N 'Roses were there again. But also Anastacia, Santana , Shakira and Jamiroquai appeared among others. The Red Hot Chili Peppers played in front of 76,000 spectators on June 3rd.
Lisbon / Madrid 2008
In 2008, Rock in Rio took place in Lisbon (on May 30th, 31st and June 1st, and on June 5th and 6th) and in Arganda del Rey , near Madrid (on June 27th and 28th and on June 4th) ., July 5th and 6th). Rock in Rio IV 2011
In 2011, the festival was held again in Rio de Janeiro after ten years . The dates selected were September 23, 24, 25, 29 and 30 and October 1 and 2, 2011. A square in Jacarepaguá served as the festival site . The bands Guns N 'Roses , Metallica , Coldplay , System of a Down and Red Hot Chili Peppers performed, among others . Lisbon / Madrid 2012
In 2012 the Rock in Rio Festival in Lisbon took place for the fifth time and the Rock in Rio in Madrid for the third time. In Lisbon alone, more than 354,000 people visited the City of Rock .
Rock in Rio VII 2017
In 2017, the Rock-in-Rio Festival took place again in Rio de Janeiro from September 15 to 24, 2017. This year the event took place in the Olympic Park of Rio in Barra da Tijuca . According to the entrepreneur and founder of Rock in Rio, Roberto Medina, the 2017 edition of the festival could be the last in Brazil. In an interview with Veja Rio magazine, the president of the event said he will focus on cities like Las Vegas for the coming years.
Rock in Rio VIII 2019
In 2019, the Rock-in-Rio-Festival took place on 2 weekends in September (from 27th to 29th) and in October (3rd to 6th) in Rio de Janeiro. The event took place again this year in the Olympic Park of Rio in Barra da Tijuca . In 2019, Scorpions , Iron Maiden , Muse , Pink , Black Eyed Peas , Whitesnake , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Bon Jovi , Megadeth , Sepultura , Slayer , Foo Fighters , Drake , Weezer , Tenacious D and Ivete Sangalo performed .
The next festival is planned in Rio de Janeiro for the year 2021.
