Tenacious D is a comedic rock band consisting of Kyle Gass and Jack Black . Both are musicians and actors.

history

Kyle Gass and Jack Black first met at the Edinburgh Fringe theater festival . Gass was around 29 at the time and Black was 20, both of whom were members of The Actors Gang from Los Angeles at the time . Gass taught Black to play the guitar and, impressed by Black's good vocal skills, suggested they form a band.

The band name was derived from an expression with which the sports reporter Eaven Harters described the tenacious defense of the basketball team New York Knicks . The name was finally chosen by the audience when they first performed live in 1994. (You could also choose from Pets or Meat , Balboa's Biblical Theater, and The Ax Lords Featuring Gorgazon's Mischief .) It was on this gig that they were discovered by David Cross , who hired them for his sketch comedy television series Mr. Show .

TV series and appearances (1997 to date)

Tenacious D made their debut on an episode of Mr. Show in 1997. Six episodes have been filmed with them thereafter, but only two of them aired in 1997. The last four episodes were only broadcast in the summer of 2000. The band was very much the focus in the episodes. The content was the story of a band trying to succeed in the music business. Many of the songs that are on the first album Tenacious D premiered on the television shows. There were also songs that have not yet been released.

At a concert in the Viper Room in Los Angeles , Tenacious D met Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters , who was impressed by the music and the skills of the two. This resulted in a cameo in the Foo Fighters video Learn To Fly . The band also gained popularity as a result and was hired as the opening act - for example for Beck , Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters.

In 2002 Tenacious D made an appearance in the video clip for Push by the band DIO . Since then there was a loose contact with its founder and namesake Ronnie James Dio until his death in 2010. So Dio plays himself in the movie Kings of Rock - Tenacious D. In addition, some references to the songs by DIO were built into the film.

On October 23, 2010, Tenacious D played in the closing event of Blizzcon , Blizzard Entertainment's in- house exhibition held in Anaheim .

In 2012 they performed at the Rock am Ring Festival and Rock im Park . These were their first appearances in Germany, followed by a tour of Germany in autumn 2012.

Tenacious D also had their first appearance in Switzerland in 2013 at the Open Air Gampel and at the FM4 Frequency Festival in St. Pölten , Austria.

Furthermore, Tenacious D performed at Rock am Ring in Mendig in 2016 despite severe storms at the insistence of the fans.

In 2019 they performed again at the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals .

The first album Tenacious D was released in 2001 and produced by the Dust Brothers . Since Tenacious D actually only appeared as a duo, a band was put together for the production of the album. a. consisted of the following people:

Many of the musicians accompanied Tenacious D in a few live appearances on television.

Her song Tribute was the most wanted music video on Kerrang TV in 2002 , even if it wasn't released as a single everywhere . The song is a tribute to the best song in the world , which they unfortunately forgot. The original version (the song has been changed several times over the years) seems to point strongly to the song Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin as “the best song in the world”, as many melodies and guitar parts are similar.

In their film Kings of Rock - Tenacious D they fight the devil in a so-called rock-off. This jam is recognized as the “best song in the world” at the end of the film and thus refers to tribute that is retrospectively dedicated to the jam. The film thus answers the question about the incident on which Tribute is based.

In 2010, fans of the band tried to get the song Tribute - eight years after it was first published - back into the charts by making arrangements on the Internet. The trigger for this was that the upcoming winner from Germany is looking for the superstar should not make it to the top of the hit list. In order for the old song to have been approved for the charts, the Sony label would have had to re-register it. However, since Sony is also responsible for the publication of the DSDS winners, the company decided against it. Instead, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin was chosen for this campaign, to which Tribute refers.

The red devil in Kings of Rock and Tribute is each played by Dave Grohl. At the end of the video for Tribute , Ben Stiller (also in Pick of Destiny ) and Liam Lynch , the video's director, walk through the picture in front of the recording studio.

Two other of the band's most famous songs are Wonderboy (with a video directed by Spike Jonze ) and Fuck Her Gently .

The band members are the same as on the previous album, but Dave Grohl plays the drums on some of the songs. According to the band, Rize of the Fenix was recorded and played in a friend's garage on a budget of $ 600.
