Seven Seas of Rhye is a song by the British rock band Queen , written by Freddie Mercury and released as an instrumental on Queen's debut album Queen in 1973 and as a single . The following year it appeared on the album Queen II , but this time more than twice as long and with vocals. The song also appeared on several live and compilation albums . Due to the success of the song, Mercury quit his job as a salesman at a stand in Kensington Market . That's why Queen was invited to the Top of the Pops show for the first time .
