Kensington Market (London)
Kensington Market was a three story indoor market at 49, Kensington High Street, in Kensington , London , England .
In the 1960s and 1970s, the building ( colloquially known as Kenny Market or Ken Market ) became a magnet for alternative cultures , especially for hippies and bohemians . From the 1980s to the late 1990s there were stores for used and new clothes, record stores, billiards and games rooms, galleries, cafes, hairdressers and tattooists for a clientele of punks , metalheads , ravers , goths and followers of the New Romantic , Trance and Acid House and followers of other subcultures of modern music, fashion , hair styles , body art , rock 'n' roll -Bekleidung, fetishism and accessories of all kinds.
From 1971 to 1975 Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor (of the rock band Queen ) ran a fashion boutique in Kensington Market.
In early 2000, Kensington Market closed, the building was empty, fell into disrepair and was demolished in 2001. From May 2003 to March 2005 a new business building was built there.
