The 36th studio album by the German rock singer Udo Lindenberg and the second studio album by Lindenberg, which took first place in the German album charts for music albums and after MTV Unplugged - Live from the Hotel Atlantic, the third album at number 1, is stronger than time for the singer. It was published on April 29, 2016, around two weeks before his 70th birthday via Warner Music Germany .

History of origin

Spiegel Online described the work on the new album as one of the most difficult in Lindenberg's career. Udo Lindenberg had never “worked so meticulously and for so long on a new album as he does now”. The album was created in cooperation with a few guest writers who could also be heard on previous albums, as well as a few surprises. Including pop literary and self-confessed Udo fan Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre and the hip-hop musician Sera Finale (from the comedy duo Keule ). The more well-known copywriters include Simon Triebel ( July ), Alexander Zuckowski , Justin Balk , Sebastian Wehlings and Tobias Kuhn . The album was produced by Andreas Herbig, Henrik Menzel and Peter Seifert , who also took part in the songwriting and had already produced the predecessor, Stark wie zwei . The album was recorded in various studios, including in London, Los Angeles, New York and Berlin and with the participation of numerous musicians.

The title track benefits from the most elaborate recording. For the song Stronger than Time , Lindenberg used the theme of the film The Godfather as a musical basis . The composer's heirs gave him clearance for the popular film theme. The text was revised with Beatrice Reszat . The recording itself took place in the famous Abbey Road Studios , together with a 60-piece orchestra. With Mein Body und Ich is a remake of a song from the album Panikpräsident (2003) with newly written music and revised vocals on Stronger than Time .

The album was announced on February 24, 2016. The first and so far only single was released on February 26, 2016 through the difficult times . Kim Frank (former singer of Echt ) directed the accompanying music video .

Music style and lyrics

In contrast to the previous album Stark wie zwei , Udo Lindenberg does not have guest appearances by other artists on the album. Instead, Lindenberg concentrates on its strengths: German pop rock with some borrowings from hard rock . The texts are in the typical Udo Lindenberg style. In addition to the slow ballads that deal with love, many of the lyrics address Udo Lindenberg himself and focus on his difficult phase in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when he was particularly noticeable for his excessive drinking and his musical career stagnated. Many texts deal with ultimate things, including the musical obituary When the Nightingale is silent . Other texts exercise system criticism or present the stereotypes typical of Udo Lindenberg.

success

Like its predecessor, the album reached number one on the official German album charts. In addition, the vinyl record also reached the top position in the German vinyl charts . It reached number seven in Austria and number two in the Swiss charts.

reception

Arne Willander from Rolling Stone awarded 3.5 stars (out of 5) and summed up:

“Maybe there are a few last words too many on this album - the sky collapses, the sun stops shining, it disappears into the smoke screen with a small suitcase in hand, and everything is so big. 'Stronger than time' is Udo's 'Casablanca', his 'Eternal Youth'. He sings solemn ballads and middle-tempo songs, the piano lukewarm, the guitars dragged, everything is retrospect, balance and melancholy, you have heard every melody somewhere. "

- Arne Willander : Rolling Stone

Torsten Groß praised the album on Spiegel Online :

“This is also due to the outstanding production of 'Stronger than Time': Very analogue, with a lot of warmth and depth, the songs are staged as timeless in the best sense of the word. Suitable for Lindenberg's voice, which is almost as warm and rousing as it was at the very beginning of his career. (…) The country has now understood that there will be no second time like Udo Lindenberg - and that it is better to celebrate him while he is still there. "

- Tobias Groß : Spiegel Online

Jens-Christian Rabe, on the other hand, was critical of the album in the Süddeutsche Zeitung . He is particularly bothered by the music, which would sound dull and shallow.

“Unfortunately, when you hear the album unbaptized, you immediately notice the incredible shallowness of the music. The spectacular lack of imagination that is put between your ears. Is that supposed to be rock music? From the fabulous panic orchestra? No. If it's going well, it's a timelessly thin Top 40 sauce. Outdated German studio workers with too many silver jewelry skulls on their fingers in the style of a ZZ-Top cover band on autopilot with an unbearable routine. Right on the verge of - yes, what actually? - Nothing?"

- Jens-Christian Rabe : Süddeutsche Zeitung

Ulf Kubanke argues similarly on Laut.de , who also praises the album:

“The method of composer outsourcing already had a somewhat irritating effect on 'Stark Wie Zwei'. (...) Sometimes the concept of having many chefs works. Sometimes, however, the brew doesn't really ignite. The result is a consistently sympathetic, partly good, but not consistently masterful work. (...) Unfortunately, not all moments are musically as strong as the intense 'Eldorado' (with Intimus Stuckrad-Barre as co-author) or 'Der Einsamste Moment' . This is not due to the performance of the most Hanseatic of all Westphalia, but to the often boring insignificance of the production of the faster pieces. "

- Ulf Kabanke : Laut.de
