Pulse Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81 (2000)

Pulse (also spelled P • U • L • S • E ) is a live double album and live video by Pink Floyd , released together in 1995 after the - The - Division - Bell - tour of 1994. Initially, the video was only available on VHS and Video CD . After several delays, the live video first appeared on DVD on July 10, 2006 . The album and video contain a live recording of the full album, The Dark Side of the Moon .

In terms of content, the live album and the video differ, as the album combines recordings from several concerts, while the video documents the complete concert on October 20, 1994 in London's Earls Court , which was also broadcast live via pay-per-view on TV .

Emergence

The recordings for the CD were made analogue with the Le Voyageur 11 Mobile at concerts in London , Rome , Modena and Hanover between August and October 1994 . The entire video was recorded on October 20, 1994 at Earls Court , London .

The editing of the various appearances for the album Pulse was criticized in part because - in contrast to the video - there was no "real" concert offered. In addition, various tracks on the album were subsequently revised in the studio . However, David Gilmour and co-producer James Guthrie emphasized that - in contrast to the previous live album Delicate Sound of Thunder - no song parts were re-recorded and mixed in in the studio. Only wrong notes and the like were corrected for the publication by taking the corresponding instrument or vocal parts from other live recordings and using them instead of the incorrect passages. The band justified this approach with the fact that they wanted to meet the high sonic demands that are made of a Pink Floyd album. Nevertheless, for these reasons the album is not considered a "real" live album by some fans. Bootlegs of the concerts recorded from the audience show, however, that the subsequent changes are actually limited to the details described.

Pulse was mixed in the Q-Sound process to cover a more natural, wider sound field. Q-Sound enables a semi- surround sound listening experience with just two speakers . The same process was used in 1992 by Roger Waters , the former head of Pink Floyd, for his album Amused to Death .

Double live album

design

Storm Thorgerson was responsible for the album cover design . The CDs were inserted in the front and back of a small photo book that was put in a slipcase. A red light-emitting diode was attached to the back of the slipcase that pulsed with an AA cell for several years. The pulse rate was matched to the average human heart rate. In the new edition of the live album, this feature was omitted and the slipcase was made slightly smaller.

Differences between US / Europe versions

The European edition of the CD album appeared on EMI , while Columbia Records was responsible for the publication elsewhere (including the USA). Both editions contain the same songs, but there are some differences in the packaging and inlay.

  • In the US version of the CD, the battery can be replaced without any problems, as the holder is only pushed into the slipcase. With the European (UK) variant, this is only possible with a little effort, since the battery and light-emitting diode are glued in the slipcase.
  • The CD imprint is a bit more spartan on the US version.
  • The inlay of the European version has about 15 pages more than the US version
  • The US version was regularly sold with an additional, printed box, which is about twice the size of the actual book slipcase. The printed cardboard box had a suitable opening for the light emitting diode. The box shows an expanded version of the print on the book slipcase.

Formats

The most popular edition of the live album is the double CD. In addition to the packaging described above, a limited so-called Papersleeve edition was also released in Japan in 2005 , with the entire presentation reminiscent of a reduced edition of LP packaging.

The album was also released on four vinyl LPs in a limited edition of 5000 copies worldwide. In contrast to the CD, the LP box has no flashing light. The small booklet from the CD is part of the box as a large book (with some additional photos). In addition, the LP version also contains the track One of These Days . This London recording of the piece has so far only been released on the Pulse LP and the cassette. The CD single High Hopes / Keep Talking , which was released in 1994, also contained a live recording of One of These Days, but it came from a concert in the Niedersachsenstadion in Hanover on August 17, 1994.

In addition to the usual CD and LP formats, Pulse also appeared as a cassette album, a format that was completely abandoned as a medium by the western music industry a short time later. The double-cassette contained in addition to the well on the vinyl album to place One of These Days have a 22-minute Ambient - sound collage , which was heard usually before the start of the concerts from the speakers. To date, this piece, mostly titled Soundscape , has only appeared on the Pulse cassette album.

Live video

The live video was initially released at the same time as the live album in June 1995 as a VHS purchase video and laser disc as well as a video CD . The content, however, differed from the live album. So is missing u. a. Astronomy Domine, you can find One of These Days and Take It Back on the video. In addition, the order on the laser disc has been changed so that the second page only contains the titles of The Dark Side of the Moon . In contrast to the album, the video does not consist of recordings of several concerts, but of the live recording of the concert on October 20, 1994 in London's Earls Court , which had previously been one of the first pay-per-view live broadcasts on television worldwide was seen. Compared to the live broadcast version, the published video version has been slightly re-cut. For example, a mistake in Shine On You Crazy Diamond is cut out. Furthermore, Comfortably Numb's 2nd solo was cut by about a minute. As with the published video, the broadcast was directed by renowned director David Mallet .

The video CD and the laser disc were discontinued relatively quickly due to the low economic success of these formats, so that for a long time the VHS version was the only available edition of the Pulse concert film. A DVD has been announced several times (first for 2005, for the ten-year release of the original album), but the release was delayed again and again. The DVD was finally released on July 11 (USA) and July 10, 2006 (Europe, rest of the world). The DVD reached platinum when it was first shipped and is currently the third most successful music DVD in the USA after Led Zeppelin and the Eagles, with a current 8-subject platinum. In Germany the Pulse DVD took first place in the Media Control Charts on July 21, 2006 .

While the VHS, Laserdisc and Video CD editions took on the design of the album, the long-time Pink Floyd designer Storm Thorgerson completely redesigned the packaging for the DVD release, albeit based on elements of the original Pulse cover design.
