A Saucerful of Secrets is the second album by the British rock band Pink Floyd . Recorded at Abbey Road Studios of EMI in London from October 1967 to April 1968, the album on June 29, 1968 published. From a commercial point of view, the album was less successful than its predecessor The Piper at the Gates of Dawn : The album only made it to number 9 in the British charts , in the USA it is still the only Pink Floyd album that never reached the charts .

Classification and background

When the album was being made, there was a sharp increase in the psychological problems of the band founder, lead guitarist and singer Syd Barrett . This became particularly clear with the last songs recorded with Barrett and composed by him, Scream Thy Last Scream and Vegetable Man , which the band considered unsuitable for the album and which have not yet been released. As Barrett became more and more unreliable and unpredictable, the remaining musicians decided to bring a second guitarist into the band. The choice fell on the musician Jeff Beck , whose engagement turned out to be too expensive. Thereupon David Gilmour asked. Gilmour, an old friend of the band and Barrett in particular, joined the band during the ongoing recording of A Saucerful of Secrets in January 1968, first as a support and later as a replacement for Barrett. In later interviews, the band members remembered that they did not want to part with Barrett at first. Initially, it was planned to continue with five musicians. However, in situations where Barrett was obviously in no shape to play a concert or make a recording, he was left at home as a precaution. At some point the band went to gigs without Barrett from the start, which made the situation obvious to everyone over time. The last recordings for A Saucerful of Secrets were therefore completely recorded by Gilmour. The separation of Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett was officially announced on April 6, 1968.

On A Saucerful of Secrets , the song Corporal Clegg features drummer Nick Mason as a singer for the first time . Since the musicians did not consider the recording to be successful in retrospect, Mason largely omitted lead vocals on the later albums.

The album cover was Hipgnosis' first work . Pink Floyd were the second band after the Beatles to be granted the right by EMI to hire their own designer.
