Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81 Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd (2001)

Is There Anybody Out There? is a music album by the British group Pink Floyd released in 2000. Overall, it represents a live recording of the album The Wall , consisting of recordings of various concerts from the The Wall Tour 1980/1981, which James Guthrie recorded at the time and compiled and mixed in at the end of the 1990s. A large part of the recordings come from the concerts at Earls Court in London .

A wall was erected on the stage during the first half of the shows. As soon as this was completed, the members of the band played in small openings within the wall, on the wall, in front of the wall and sometimes completely behind the wall.

The cover of the album shows the four masks of the band members (in this order: Roger Waters , David Gilmour , Nick Mason and Richard Wright ) by the "surrogate band" (other musicians who, based on the lyrics of the song, the Piece In the flesh played) were worn.

background

Is There Anybody Out There? contains live versions of all original songs from The Wall as well as the two additional tracks The last Few Bricks and What Shall We Do Now? The latter was originally supposed to be on the studio album, but was replaced by the shorter Empty Spaces because it was too long for the LP side . In ' The Wall film is to find again. The last Few Bricks , on the other hand, is an instrumental piece that was played after Another Brick in the Wall (Part 3) to give the stage helpers enough time to finish the wall before Roger Waters concluded the first half of the concert with a goodbye through the last gap in the wall Cruel World sang. The song contained characteristic elements from The Happiest Days of Our Lives , Don't Leave Me Now , Young Lust and Empty Spaces . Until the album was released, this instrumental track had no title - on some bootleg recordings it was called Almost Gone by fans ; the official name was first suggested to Waters by producer James Guthrie while mixing the album.

In addition, the album also contains two spoken pieces called MC: Atmos (or Master of Ceremonies on some releases ). These were a fixed part of the show and were voiced by Gary Yudman , who accompanied both the The Wall concerts at Earls Court and the Nassau Coliseum in 1980 and 1981 as an MC .

The album met with some criticism after its release: Many critics complained that it was too strictly constructed and not dynamic enough for a live album, which means it is little more than a poorer version of the studio album, especially the visual aspects of the performances on a CD -Publication completely disappeared. Others praised Is There Anybody Out There? as an excellent reproduction of the live shows of the time.

Some pieces differ significantly from the studio versions: Many songs were longer intro and / or outro (u a.. In the Flesh? , In the Flesh , The Thin Ice , Mother , Run Like Hell , and some extended solos (u a).. Mother , Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) , Young Lust , Comfortably numb ). The Show Must Go On has an additional verse that was cut from the original studio version before it was released.

In July 2005, Is There Anybody Out There? Released in the US and Canada after Columbia Records lost production recordings. James Guthrie and Joel Plante created new masters , whereupon the indication "mastered by" in the booklet in the new edition was changed from "Doug Sax" to "James Guthrie & Joel Plante". In addition, details of the songwriter information have been corrected; it is now mentioned that MC: Atmos uses a sample of We'll Meet Again by Vera Lynn on the first CD .

In the US, the album peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200 , and went platinum in May 2000.

expenditure

Is There Anybody Out There? is the only Pink Floyd album to date that was not released as a vinyl LP . A few months after the CD, a limited vinyl picture disc was released , but it only contained a few songs from the full album.

The full album has therefore only been released as a double CD. There were two editions of this:

  • On the one hand there was a deluxe limited edition, which consisted of an upright cardboard slipcase containing a bound book that contained the two CDs on the first and last cover pages, and numerous photos, stage construction drawings and detailed notes on heavy paper, including all Pink's involved -Floyd members and producer James Guthrie. Some copies of this edition signed by all band members were also raffled off by EMI as part of an internet competition. In contrast to his former colleagues, however, Roger Waters signed on the back.
  • One and a half weeks after the deluxe edition, the standard edition appeared, which contains both CDs in a wide double-CD jewel case with an ordinary booklet inserted, which also contains some of the photos and notes from the deluxe edition.

Playback accuracy

  • During the The Wall appearances, Roger Waters introduced Run like hell with partly varying comments about the audience as well as about the inflatable pig that Pink Floyd used as a trademark at concerts. Strictly speaking, the album contains a mixture of two recordings from June 15 and 17, 1981 from Earls Court in London.
  • At some shows, during the MC: Atmos sections, it was also announced that concert-goers who were standing on their seats would be shot.
  • During the live concerts the keyboards were louder than on the live album, so there was a clearer balance between guitar and keyboards. The keyboards are mixed down on the album.
