content

Like all other songs from The Wall , Empty Spaces tells part of the story of the protagonist Pink , who erects an imaginary wall to protect himself from emotional influences.

At this point, Pink is already an adult and married, but his wall puts Pink and his wife in serious trouble. Now Pink asks how he should complete his wall.

music

Empty Spaces is played in E minor and is 2 minutes and 10 seconds long.

The song begins with a comparatively long, instrumental intro consisting of guitar riffs and drums. While Waters sings his verse, elements from the track What Shall We Do Now? which was initially recorded for The Wall , but then had to be removed for reasons of space (the running time of the vinyl format is severely limited).

Backward message

Just before the vocal part begins, a hidden message can be found. Normally played, it sounds incomprehensible. However, if you play them backwards, you can hear the followingː

–Hello, Luka ... Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont ...
- Roger! Carolyne's on the phone!
-OK.
