Marooned is an instrumental piece by the British band Pink Floyd . The piece appeared on the album The Division Bell in 1994 , was released as a single with High Hopes and won a Grammy Award in 1995 .

Emergence

The instrumental piece was written by David Gilmour and Richard Wright . It was created during a jam session at the Astoria in early 1993. A Whammy effect device was used to generate particularly high- pitched guitar sounds , which played the guitar tones an octave higher. Marooned also features whale chants from 1971's Echoes , one of several quotes from earlier Pink Floyd compositions used on The Division Bell .

publication

Marooned was released in 1994 as the fourth track on the album The Division Bell and released in the same year as the B-side on the CD single High Hopes . A version shortened to 2:02 min is included on the compilation Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd .

The piece was only performed live three times: at the two concerts in Oslo (Norway) in 1994 as part of the Division Bell tour (one of the recordings is part of the bonus material on the Pulse concert DVD) and in 2004 at The Strat Pack concert on the occasion of the 50th birthday of the Fender Stratocaster guitar, at which Gilmour performed with his Stratocaster "# 0001".

To mark the 20th anniversary of The Division Bell's release, a newly produced video for Marooned was released online in 2014 . The video is also part of the The Division Bell Deluxe Box released in 2014 and the separately available The Division Bell -5.1 Mix DVD. The latter also contain 5.1 surround sound mixes produced by Andy Jackson by Marooned as audio and video versions. The video was produced by Hipgnosis co- founder Aubrey Powell, who used footage from the International Space Station for the first half and filmed it in the Ukrainian ghost town of Pripyat for the second half in April 2014 .
