Harald Hauswald (born May 3, 1954 in Radebeul ) is a German photographer who became known for his everyday and Berlin photographs. He is co-founder of the Ostkreuz picture agency .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a photographer (1970–1972) and work in Radebeul, Harald Hauswald moved to Berlin in 1977 , where he initially pursued various activities, such as a stoker , restorer , photo laboratory assistant and then in his learned profession as a photographer in the Stephanus Foundation in Berlin-Weissensee . In 1989 he was accepted into the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK).

Mainly through the book Berlin-Ost: The other side of a city , which he made together with Lutz Rathenow , Hauswald is considered an important critical chronicler of the end times of the GDR. He was observed by the GDR State Security (MfS) under the name of a cyclist because of his too realistic photos .

He has been working as a freelancer since 1990. His photo reports were featured in GEO , Stern and ZEITmagazin, among others. On September 23, 1996, Hauswald received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. In 2006, the Unity Prize (Citizens Prize for German Unity) from the Federal Agency for Civic Education followed .

In 2007 he was able to win over numerous well-known authors such as Freya Klier , Thomas Brussig and Alexander Osang for his book Alexanderplatz: Photographic and literary memories to write down their very personal experiences and impressions of the square.

In 2009 he presented some of his works in the group exhibition Ostzeit: Stories from a Past Land in the House of World Cultures in Berlin.

In 2013 his photo book Far East: The Last Years of the GDR appeared. Photographs 1986–1990 .

In 2017 the volume "Ost-Berlin" appeared in a new edition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the first publication. In a foreword, the historian Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk et al. a. how the MfS reacted to the publication.
