Mathias Bertram

Mathias Bertram (born January 22, 1960 in Berlin ) is a German publicist and book designer.

Life

As the son of a utility graphic designer Axel Bertram Bertram grew his mother, the fashion journalist in the household Dorothea Melis , and photographer Roger Melis in East Berlin and studied at the Humboldt University of Berlin German . After receiving his doctorate in 1992, he worked on research and editing projects at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg. From 1997 to 2002 he was first editor, then program manager at Directmedia publishing house and edited the CD-ROM series “Digital Library”, including the widespread text edition “German literature from Lessing to Kafka”. Since 2002 he has worked as a journalist, editor and book designer. Since 2003 he has designed all books and advertising material for Lehmstedt Verlag Leipzig (Kurt Wolff Foundation sponsorship award 2005). In 2005, Bertram began editing photo books, primarily on the photography of East German photo realism. He published the work of photographers such as Roger Melis, Bernd Heyden , Gundula Schulze Eldowy , Christian Borchert , Eberhard Klöppel, Harald Hauswald , Fritz Eschen and Konrad Hoffmeister in several editions, some of which were volumes. With the two-volume anthology "Das pure Leben" (pure life), he has put together a collection of photographs by the most famous photo artists in the GDR, which were viewed as visual novels about everyday life in the GDR. In 2012 his photo book »Galerie der Straße« was published in the tradition of objets trouvés .
