Dorothea Melis , née Voigt (born February 22, 1938 in Berlin ; † June 29, 2015 there ) was a German fashion journalist .

Life

Dorothea Melis grew up as the daughter of an architect in Berlin-Weißensee . She studied fashion design at the University of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee. From 1961 to 1970 she headed the fashion department of the GDR fashion magazine Sibylle , then still as Dorothea Bertram . After criticizing the paper's honest fashion concept in her theoretical thesis, after her appointment she developed a new fashion concept together with photographers such as Arno Fischer , Günter Rössler and Roger Melis , which was based on the ideal of the modern, self-confident, educated and professional woman Tried to understand fashion as part of culture.

After the appointment of a new editor-in-chief, Melis moved to the state-owned Exquisit trading company in 1970 , where she was responsible for press and public relations until 1990. The fashion company produced high-quality, modern clothing and was considered a luxury brand because the collections stood out from the usual ready-to-wear range with their sophisticated design concepts and high quality.

Most recently, Melis gave lectures on fashion in the GDR, was editor of photo books and curator of photo exhibitions.

From 1957 to 1962 she was married to the graphic artist Axel Bertram (1936–2019), with whom she had a son, and from 1970 to the photographer Roger Melis (1940–2009). Dorothea Melis died on June 29, 2015 at the age of 77 after a long, serious illness in her hometown of Berlin.
