Arno Fischer (born April 14, 1927 in Berlin-Wedding ; † September 13, 2011 in Neustrelitz ) was a German photographer and university professor .

Life

From 1947 to 1953 Arno Fischer studied sculpture in East and West Berlin . In 1953 he moved to East Berlin. From 1954 he worked as a photo lab technician until he became an assistant in 1956 and a senior assistant in 1971 with a teaching assignment for photography with Professor Klaus Wittkugel at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art .

The book Situation Berlin , which he wrote and was ready to print , a project from 1953 to 1960, was not produced because of the construction of the Wall in 1961.

Fischer worked as a photographer and publicist for the magazine Sibylle and other periodicals. His oeuvre, consisting mainly of fashion and travel photography, follows the tradition of life photography . Fischer was particularly interested in the state of society, the relationships between people and the existential constitution of the individual.

In 1965/1966 he and like-minded people founded a group of photographers that has been called Direkt since 1969 . 1972 to 1974 he was a guest lecturer at the University of Graphic and Book Art (HGB) Leipzig. In 1983 he was given a teaching position at the HGB. From 1985 to 1993 he was professor for artistic photography there.

From 1990 to 2000 he was teaching photo journalism at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences .

In 2000 he received the Erich Salomon Prize of the German Society for Photography (DGPh). The working group photography in the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK) was co-founded by him.

He was one of the style-forming photographers for the German Democratic Republic with his fashion shoots for the magazines Das Magazin and Sibylle - magazine for fashion and culture . Among other things, he selected the photographs for the steles of the Marx-Engels-Forum in Berlin-Mitte.

As a co-founder of the private photography school photography on Schiffbauerdamm (fas) in Berlin, he taught there until 2006. Subsequently, he taught at the Ostkreuz School of Photography , also in Berlin, until his death .
