from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ursula Arnold (born March 10, 1929 in Gera ; † May 24, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German photographer .

Live and act

Ursula Arnold, whose father was already a photographer, studied photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig . The attempt to work as a freelance photographer failed. In 1956 Arnold moved to East Berlin and worked as a camerawoman in the “Dramatic Art” department of the German TV broadcaster . She continued to take photos on her days off.

reception

Her photographic oeuvre was decisively influenced by her critical view of the GDR reality. In the GDR, photography was often a means of political education. Opposition standpoints that contrasted the official, state-compliant view with a different picture were rejected. Ursula Arnold was one of those artists who did not allow themselves to be involved. Franziska Schmidt wrote in the catalog for the exhibition in the Berlinische Galerie dedicated to the artist : “[Her pictures] show the quiet and hidden sides of life in which people are alone with themselves and everyday worries. Her pictures are an expression of the discrepancy between the propagated ideological portrayal of the optimistic person as a combative hero of socialism and the prevailing conditions. "In the words of the artist:" My sympathy belongs to those who do not belong to the rulers. I want to look for the special and the simple in everyday life, collect nuances, express life ... meet relatives in anonymity. "

A central motif of her realistic pictures, which were mainly created in Leipzig and Berlin, are people in urban surroundings. This is how important pictures from Prenzlauer Berg in the 1980s were created. From 1990 to 1994 Arnold only photographed landscapes in the Berlin area.

Together with Evelyn Richter and Arno Fischer , she is one of the most important representatives of her generation of photographers working in the GDR. Arnold was a member of the “action photography” group, which also included Roger and Renate Rössing , F. O. Bernstein , Günter Rössler and Volkmar Jaeger .
