Potentia Animi was the name of a musical group founded in 2002 . Her name means "strength of the soul".

history

Potentia Animi was formed in 2002. Before this band, the musicians had already played in various other bands in the medieval scene. Brother Liebe was a member of Corvus Corax , when the band was still called Congregatio, and of the Inchtabokatables . In 2004 the debut album The First Prayer was released via Staupa Musica, a German sub-label from Metal Blade Records . In 2005 the band played at the M'era Luna Festival .

In 2006 the second album Psalm II was released . The band also performed at Summer Breeze that year . The Christmas EP Are the Lights Lit? Was also released towards the end of the year . . Out covert Potentia Animi several well-known Christmas songs musically, the lyrics were changed.

In 2008 the band played, among other things, at the Festival of Minstrels at Schloss Burg in Solingen . In October 2008, the band announced their split. Their farewell concert took place on April 30th, 2009 at the Wasserburg Roßlau . In 2014 the band gave an exclusive concert at the Hörnerfest in Brande-Hörnerkirchen .

style

The band members joined in cassocks on, but acted contrary to this occurrence very unchaste. They also often wore masks . Their music mixes elements of medieval music and rock . Even electronic sounds are to be found frequently in music. The band was mainly based on Gregorian monk chants . With Qui per Mundum from the album Psalm II , they added spoken chant to their medieval music . Musically, the band is compared to the greats of the genre, such as Subway to Sally , In Extremo and, especially because of the electronic sounds, Tanzwut . The magazine Eclipsed saw this rather negatively. There it was said that Potentia Animi amalgamating “ Rammstein's dull-cheeked neutron metal with the false pathos of Gregorian”.

The band published their lyrics mostly in Latin , often in so-called kitchen Latin . The rest of the songs are in German. Parts of the texts were taken from the Carmina Burana . Despite their somewhat shoddy and rather blasphemous image, the band tried to translate authentic songs, some of which were considered lost, into modern times. Modern standpoints were only occasionally taken. The texts are still mostly vulgar and show clear signs of religious criticism. When asked about the latter, Titus Jany, who embodies brother love, explained: “We are all religious and belong to different denominations , as unbelievable as that sounds. For us the difference is that we see church and religion as two different things. We do not make fun of religion in any way, only the institution of the church. You have to be careful not to get too close to anyone in this environment. "

Mario Gericke, aka brother Nachtfraß, was the main composer, who presented his rough versions to his band colleagues who worked on the elaborations.
