The Roßlau Castle is a moated castle at about 58 m above sea level in a local location in the street Am Schlossgarten 18b in the Roßlau district in Dessau-Roßlau , Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The oldest parts of the castle date from the 12th century. Before that, a Slavic settlement castle stood in the same place .

Investigations on the walls have shown that only the statement before 1400 can be made for the construction time. In the first construction phase, the residential tower and ring wall were built , later two more buildings followed, which can only be covered with the smallest remains of foundations. Special features of this medieval castle are the representative residential tower and the discovered medieval warm air heating (stone chamber air heating). During excavations, several finds from this period were found on the castle grounds, such as a chess piece and a gold ring, the Roßlauer Loyalty Ring , probably one of the oldest wedding rings in Germany. The castle is first dated in 1358 as rozlowe dat hus , when the princes of Anhalt bought the castle back from the Counts of Lindau .

The Rundburg was the seat of the von Schlichting ministerial family . It was created as a Niederburg with three moats . In 1348 the castle came into the possession of the Princes of Anhalt. It was then expanded and greatly expanded until the 16th century.

From the middle of the 17th century, the castle lost its importance, as the princes of Anhalt-Zerbst had moved to Zerbst Castle . In 1740 a hunting lodge, which is still preserved today, was built near the castle, which was connected to Roßlau Castle by a bridge.

It was not until Duke Heinrich von Anhalt-Köthen became interested again in the castle in the 19th century and renovated it between 1836 and 1838 so that it could once again serve as a mansion.

The castle and the palace changed hands when the princely line of Anhalt-Zerbst (1793) and Anhalt-Köthen (1847) died out. From the middle of the 19th century the castle served as a ducal district forester. In 1870 the castle burned down completely. Only in 1923/24 apartments were furnished again, which were used until 1986. After the war, the municipality's land registry office also moved in.
