Corvus Corax is a band from the Middle Ages scene from Germany , also known as the kings of the minstrels . The East German band was founded at the end of 1989. Founding members are Castus and Venustus . Venustus (Wim) builds a large part of the instruments such as bagpipes and shawms himself. Corvus corax is the scientific name for the common raven . This band name was chosen because the then young music group had to leave their ravens behind when they fled the GDR in 1989 .
history
The two founders Castus Rabensang and Wim Dobbrisch previously worked in the medieval formation Tippelklimper . They initially played folklore, later they were one of the first representatives of the bagpipe rock style . Since 1989, they have been using instruments by Wim Dobbrisch, who created the unmistakable Corvus Corax bagpipe sound, which, among other things, shaped the so-called "market bag". While working on the soundtrack for the fairy tale film The Story of the Goose Princess and her Faithful Horse Falada, composed by Zdenek John, they took the opportunity to record their first album Ante Casu Peccati in DEFA Studios in Potsdam. In 1989 Corvus Corax was finally formed.
In 1990 they joined forces with the formation Zumpfkopule . Both groups performed together at medieval markets and eventually recorded the album Congregatio together . Eventually, Master Selbfried von Zumpfkopule joined the group. Several concerts followed in Europe as well as in Japan.
In 1992 they strengthened themselves to a quintet. The broadcaster Free Berlin financed the next CD Inter Deum Et Diabolum Semper Musica Est . In 1993 they appeared for the first time at the Kaltenberg knight tournament , where they have since become regulars.
In 1996, the single Tanzwut was a rather unusual project. Because it was here that Corvus Corax used electronic elements for the first time. This led to the side project Tanzwut , in which medieval sounds and electronics fuse with one another. As Corvus Corax, however, they remained true to acoustic instruments. In the following time there were always line-ups and newcomers, so that the group sometimes consisted of up to eight musicians.
In 1995 they also appeared for the first time at the laundry castle , where they have also been regular guests ever since. In 2000 they were able to win the Dracula heir Ottomar Rodolphe Vlad Dracula Prince Kretzulesco as a guest singer for Mille Anni Passi Sunt .
In 2001 the group released their titles for various bands and DJs for electronic editing. The result of this project was the CD In Electronica .
In 2005, the group set about setting new songs from the Carmina Burana . On this project, the group worked with a symphony orchestra and a choir . The ambitious work finally appeared under the title Cantus Buranus . With their album Venus Vina Musica they briefly returned to pure minstrel music, but afterwards they released Cantus Buranus II , where other tracks from the Carmina Burana were set to music, and Cantus Buranus - the organ work , where various songs of the Carmina Burana were set to music on the organ .
In 2006 they worked with Piranha Bytes ' composer Kai Rosenkranz on the soundtrack for the computer game Gothic 3 .
Corvus Corax had a guest appearance in Die Diener der Pest , episode 26 of the radio play series Point Whitmark produced by Volker Sassenberg , which appeared in May 2009.
In the original pilot episode of the HBO series Game of Thrones , the band made an appearance at a festival. However, the scenes in question were not adopted for the published version.
Corvus Corax took part in the rock opera Excalibur in 2010.
In September 2010 the band announced that Corvus Corax and Tanzwut were going their separate ways, which is why Teufel and Martin Ukrasvan left Corvus Corax. Vit and Steve joined the band as new musicians. They made their debut on Sverker , the 11th studio album and the first, new album from the Middle Ages in over five years. While the album Venus, Vina, Musica represented a musical journey through Mediterranean countries, Sverker deals almost exclusively with Nordic topics.
In 2012 the musicians of Corvus Corax founded the band BerlinskiBeat together with the Balkan Beats DJ Robert Soko , whose music is a mixture of street music and club sounds and contains singing with Berlin dialect. BerlinskiBeat released the album Gassenhauer in 2012 .
In October 2013 Corvus Corax released their first official music video clip with the video for a new song, Derdriu . It was financed through crowdfunding with the help of the fans via pledgemusic . In November the 12th studio album, Gimlie , was released . If you consider that on the 1995 released Tritonus record , Tippel the Raven, another "singer" was represented as an additional member compared to Inter Deum Et Diabolum Semper Musica Est , Gimlie is the first studio album in the band's history to be recorded with exactly the same line-up became like its previous album.
During the 25th anniversary tour until spring 2015 it became known that founding member Wim Dobbrisch would leave the band in order to be able to devote himself completely to his work as a bagpipe maker and other projects in his company "Corvus Corax Bagpipes". The last concert with him took place on January 31, 2015 in Hamburg.
In 2015 the second album of the side project BerlinskiBeat was released with the title Die Stadt is HOT! , which was recorded by the band Die Ärzte with the participation of Rodrigo González , and another album was released in 2016 with the name Miss you can dance to the left .
In February 2017, the double bass player Michael Frick joined the band. The band performed at the Wacken Open Air in 2017 .
