Cantus buranus

Cantus Buranus ( lat. "Singing from Benediktbeuern ") is the adaptation and new setting of primarily secular texts from the medieval manuscript Carmina Burana by the music group Corvus Corax . Cantus Buranus is characterized by the interplay of medieval instruments (played by Corvus Corax) with a classical orchestra and choir.

Initially, twelve pieces from the collection were released on CD ( Roadrunner Records ) under the title " Cantus Buranus " . In addition to the CD, the limited first edition comes with an audio DVD on which "Cantus Buranus" can be heard in Dolby Digital 5.1 from the conductor's perspective.

In February 2008, the recordings for the successor entitled " Cantus Buranus II " began with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg under the direction of Bernard Fabuljan .

Instruments used

In addition to the "usual" instruments of a classical orchestra, a large number of other medieval instruments are used, most of which were handmade by Corvus Corax:

Performances

Cantus buranus

The public rehearsal of the work took place on January 30, 2005 in the Cottbus State Theater with the participation of the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Opera Choir of the Cottbus State Theater under the direction of the conductor Jörg Iwer as well as the vocal ensemble Psalteria from Prague and the choir Ivan Pl.Zajc, Zagreb . World premiere was on August 5th, 2005 at Wacken Open Air with the same cast.

The most famous performances so far took place on August 19 and 20, 2005 in front of a total of around 5,000 spectators on Museum Island in Berlin as part of the annual Museum Island Festival. The event was sponsored by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit . These performances were recorded and appeared on March 3, 2006 under the title " Cantus Buranus Live in Berlin " on CD and DVD .

Cantus Buranus was also performed on January 12, 2006 as the opening event of the EuroSonic Festival in the Martini Kerk in Groningen with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under the conductor Bernard Fabuljan .

Cantus Buranus II

The second part of the work was partially premiered on May 31, 2008 in Halle (Saale) . The concert had to be interrupted due to a storm, so that not all the planned pieces could be performed.

The actual world premiere and album premiere was the appearance on the Black Stage of the Wacken Open Air on August 1st, 2008. The world premiere took place in November 2008 as part of the Germany Promenade in China.

The stage choir of Cantus Buranus II has been the "Passionata Choir Berlin" since May 2008. Since March 2009, the "Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague" has been obliged to perform.

Publications

The various sound and image carriers of the Cantus Buranus are published by Roadrunner Records . Cantus Buranus II was released on the band's own label Pica Music.
