history
The Buron / Benediktbeuern monastery was very probably founded in 725/728 by Karl Martell during two campaigns to Bavaria as a secular base and as a guard and control station in front of the Kesselberg at a tactically favorable location. Karl Martell appointed the noble Alemanni Lantfrid, a member of the Huosi , as his reliable vassal . Around 739/740 the monastery consecrated to St. Jacob and St. Benedict was founded as a Benedictine abbey . Archbishop Bonifatius introduced Lantfrid as a Benedictine abbot and consecrated the first monastery church. A few years later, Charlemagne brought the relic from the right arm of St. Benedict. As a result, the monastery previously known as “Buron” was renamed “Benedictoburanum”. After the construction of the monastery was completed, the first monastery school was founded. The women's monastery founded in Kochel am See in the 8th century was relocated to Benediktbeuern monastery after destruction by the Hungarians in 908 (955 at the latest), where it had its seat on the north side of the men's monastery until the 14th century. Hence the double abbot staff (abbot and abbess) in the coat of arms of the Benediktbeuern monastery.
The first Corpus Christi procession in Bavaria took place in this place in 1273. Before 1800, Benediktbeuern was the seat of the Upper and Lower Court of the Benediktbeuern Monastery. In 1803 it was dissolved in the course of secularization . The Carmina Burana , a collection of vagante songs from the 13th century, was found in the monastery library . The area of the municipality of Benediktbeuern became an independent political municipality in 1818 as part of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria . At that time the community was still called Laingruben and has only borne the name of the monastery since November 30, 1865. The old village is on both sides of Dorfstrasse and Mariabrunnweg. The settlement is densest here and has a rural character.
In 1930 the Salesians of Don Bosco bought the monastery and renovated the buildings. Around 50 religious live there today. The monastery complex also houses a university (after the philosophical theological university closes in winter semester 13/14), the youth training facility, the action center, the center for environment and culture, the local youth club and the Don Bosco youth hostel. In the Meierhof of the monastery, the costume information center and the specialist advice for home care of the Upper Bavaria district are also located.
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 2,797 to 3,617 by 820 inhabitants or 29.3%.
politics
In the 2020–2026 term of office , the municipal council has 16 members. The choice brought the following result:
CSU / Benediktbeurer Mitte (BM) | 5 seats |
Free Citizens List Together (FBM) | 4 seats |
Free Association of Voters (FWGB) | 3 seats |
Benediktbeurer Citizens' Association (BB) | 3 seats |
Young Union (JU) | 1 seat |
Compared to the 2014–2020 term of office, the CSU / BM and the FBM each had to give up a mandate, FWGB remained unchanged, BB won an additional mandate and the JU ran for the first time.
Another member and chairman of the municipal council is Mayor Toni Ortlieb (Benediktbeurer citizens' association). He succeeded the late Johann Kiefersauer in July 2019. After the death, the new mayor election was brought forward. Ortlieb prevailed against the CSU candidate Hans Seller (49%) in the second ballot, which took place as a runoff election, with 51% and is elected until April 30, 2026 (general local election).
coat of arms
The coat of arms description reads:
"In red, two diagonally crossed golden abbot rods, applied a vertically placed silver quill."
The abbot bars are symbolic of the formerly famous Benedictine monastery, which once had a women's and a men's convent in the Bavarian Alpine foothills. The nib is intended to be a reminder of the pen's once important book illumination and writing school.
Attractions
- Benediktbeuern Abbey : The main attraction is the former Benedictine abbey founded around 739/740 . The current baroque form of the monastery complex dates back to the years 1669 to 1679. In 1803 the Benediktbeuern monastery was secularized . Salesians of Don Bosco have lived in the monastery since 1930 and maintained the Benediktbeuern University of Philosophy and Theology in the monastery area until 2013 . In addition, the Benediktbeuern department of the Catholic Foundation University in Munich with its degree in social work is housed in the monastery. In 1803, the Carmina Burana , a collection of vagante songs from the 13th century, was found in the monastery library . The manuscript, also called “Codex Buranus”, is now in the Bavarian State Library . A selection of Carmina Burana was set to music by Carl Orff in 1935/36 . The monastery can be visited.

The church received the rank of minor basilica in 1972 .

- Fraunhofer Glashütte (museum): After secularization, Pierre-Louis Guinand set up a glassworks in an annex to the monastery on behalf of Joseph von Utzschneider . From this the optical workshops of the Mathematical-Precision Mechanical Institute of Utzschneider, Fraunhofer and Reichenbach emerged. The workshops were headed by Joseph von Fraunhofer from 1809 to 1819 . There he discovered the absorption lines in the solar spectrum ( Fraunhofer lines ) and produced optical devices of world renown. The glassworks is now a museum.
- The Museum for Environment and Culture provides information about the ecology of the region. It is located in the Meierhof of the monastery.
