Aegidius Jais (also Egidius , birth name Joseph Jais ; born March 17, 1750 in Mittenwald , † December 4, 1822 in Benediktbeuern ) was a Benedictine priest , Roman Catholic theologian and university professor .

Life

Jais was the son of the Mittenwald violin maker Franziskus Jais. His mother died early. Jais came to the Benediktbeuern monastery school . He received his further education until his graduation in 1769 at the Munich Jesuit High School , where he also established his lifelong friendship with Johann Michael Sailer . He then entered the Benedictine order in the Benediktbeuern monastery. On November 11, 1770, he took the vows and was given the name Aegidius . He then went to the Sankt Emmeram monastery in Regensburg to continue his studies. There he heard physics , mathematics and hermeneutics . In August 1773 he returned to Benediktbeuern and completed his theology studies. On March 23, 1776, the ordination took place there .

In 1777 Jais became confessor at the pilgrimage site of Maria Plain , and in 1778 professor of grammar at the Benedictine high school in Salzburg . In 1784 he took over the professorship for rhetoric at the grammar school and also became school prefect . In 1788 he switched to pastoral care in Jachenau and in 1792 went to the Rott monastery as a novice master . Around 1803 he came back to the Benediktbeuern monastery. There he took over the parish of Heilbrunn . After the dissolution of the monastery as part of the secularization , he went to Salzburg.

Jais was appointed professor of moral and theology at the University of Salzburg in 1802 . His lectures were very popular. In 1805 he also took over the post of rector of the university. In 1806, however, he took a call from the Grand Duke Ferdinand III. from Tuscany to Würzburg . There he worked as a prince tutor at the court of the grand duke. When he moved to Florence again in 1814 , Jais accompanied the court there, but returned to Benediktbeuern on October 28, 1814. However, he kept in touch with his pupils by letter.

After his return, Jais was allowed to live in the rooms of the dissolved monastery and supported the local pastor with pastoral care. He was also active in literature until his death. On December 2, 1822, he is said to have been working on the publication of his sermons. In 1820, after the pastor's death there, he briefly represented the pastor's office in his home town of Mittenwald.

In Benediktbeuern, the Egidius-Jais-Straße was named after him, in Mittenwald the Pater-Aegidius-Jais Kindergarten and the Egidius-Jais-Saal in the town hall of the community.
