Thomas Jocher

Thomas Matthias Jocher (born October 2, 1952 in Benediktbeuern ) is a German architect , urban planner and scientist . He is a member of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning (DASL), the Association of German Architects (BDA) and the German Werkbund (DWB). In 1991 he founded the architecture firm Fink + Jocher in Munich together with Dietrich Fink . In 1997 he was appointed director of the Institute for Living and Design at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

The architect Mathias Jocher (1925–2018) and Mathilde Jocher (1923–2016) were Thomas Jocher's parents. Since 1980 he has been married to Andrea Jocher, b. Wirth; both live and live in Munich. Thomas Jocher studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich . In 1980 he graduated as a Dipl.-Ing. from; In 1991 he started working at the Faculty of Architecture with the thesis Angerdörfer in Bayern - Settlement Structure and Topography of Medieval Villages in the 19th Century. to Dr.-Ing. PhD .

After completing his studies, Thomas Jocher worked for the Gebhard + arc architecture firm in Munich from 1980 to 1983. He then worked as an academic adviser at the Institute for Urban Development and Regional Planning at the Technical University of Munich (1984–1990). In 1991 he founded the architecture office Fink + Jocher in Munich together with Dietrich Fink . From 2004 to 2007 he was a DFG specialist and later a scientific advisory board member of the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research . In 2015 he was a member of the building cost reduction commission of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and was active in numerous national and international architecture juries, often as chairman.

Since 2000, Jocher has participated in almost 100 juries (architecture and urban development competitions), mostly as chairman.

Research and Teaching

Professorship at the University of Stuttgart

In 1997, Jocher received a call to the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart at the newly founded Institute for Living and Design (IWE). There he was director of the institute from 1997 to 2018 and vice dean at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning from 2008 to 2012 . The management at the institute included the professorship for architecture (Jocher), a professorship for architecture and housing sociology ( Harlander ) and planning science (Reuter). Jocher taught “building theory” in the architecture (B. Sc.) And housing (M. Sc.) Courses.

Researches

At the University of Stuttgart and the University of Munich, the following research topics were worked on together with other universities and many other project participants:

Teaching and research at other universities

In 2007 he was accepted as an "International Advisory Board Member" by the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the internationally renowned Tongji University , Shanghai .

In 2009 he carried out a research semester at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, researching housing suitable for the elderly.

In 2019/20 he continues to teach at the Munich University of Applied Sciences (design and lectures in "Introduction to Design") and in the Department of Design and Housing (EUW) at the TU Darmstadt (design and lectures in Housing).
