Tilman Harlander

Tilman Harlander (* 1946 in Traunstein ) is a German architecture, living and urban sociologist. From 1997 to 2011 he researched and taught as a professor for the sociology of architecture and living at the Institute for Living and Design of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart.

Live and act

Tilman Harlander studied sociology , economics , psychology and political science at the LMU Munich and the FU Berlin . From 1972 he was a research assistant , senior academic adviser and private lecturer at the chair for planning theory at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University . In 1978 he received his doctorate from the University of Oldenburg. rer. pole. with the topic "Regional Development Policy in Emilia-Romagna ". The habilitation (subject: "Housing Construction and Housing Policy in the Time of National Socialism") took place in 1994 at RWTH Aachen and was awarded the "Friedrich Wilhelm Prize" of RWTH Aachen. In 1996/97 he took over the chair of planning theory at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University. From 1989 to 1997 he was chairman of the supervisory board of Aachen's municipal non-profit housing company. Harlander was visiting professor at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Lima in 1999 . From 1997 to 2011 he was a professor for the sociology of architecture and living at the University of Stuttgart (dean from 2002 to 2006 and electoral senator from 2006 to 2010).

Since his retirement in 2011 he has been a freelance journalist and consultant as well as a member of numerous architecture and urban planning juries. He was a member of the jury for the German Urban Development Prize (2006 to 2012) and in 2017 was appointed to the Federal Ministry of the Interior's Independent Historians' Commission "Building and Planning under National Socialism. Requirements, Institutions, Effects".

Publications and editorships

Harlander has published numerous publications focusing on the sociology of architecture and housing, urban and district development, urban history and urbanization research, and housing policy. He is co-editor of the quarterly magazine “Forum Stadt” (until 2010 “Die alte Stadt”) and of “Contributions to urban history and urbanization research”. He was head of various research projects funded and published by the German Research Foundation , the VW Foundation , the Wüstenrot Foundation and the LBS Foundation for Construction and Living .
