Noël Alexandre

Noël Alexandre ( OP ), also Latinized as Natalis Alexander , (born January 19, 1639 in Rouen , † August 21, 1724 in Paris ) was a French Roman Catholic theologian and church historian . His 23-volume church history Selecta historiae eccl. capita can be seen as the first comprehensive Catholic church history of modern times.

life and work

Alexandre joined the Dominican Order in 1655 . In 1656 he came to Paris to study at the St-Jacques monastery. There he was appointed professor of philosophy and theology. He also acted there from 1704 to 1708 as provincial. He had great influence in all matters concerning the Paris Sorbonne between 1680 and 1720 . He took a polemical position on theological and ecclesiastical issues of the time. He defended the Declaratio cleri gallicani of 1682. He fought against laxism , probabilism , molinism and accommodation in the rite controversy. He regarded the bull Unigenitus as a concoction of the Jesuits against Thomism . He appeared against it in the Sorbonne and appealed to the general council in this regard. Shortly before his death, he withdrew this appellation.

Noël's main importance is in the field of church history. Here he earned an outstanding reputation as a source and literary author. Although his church history has partly succumbed to polemics and apologetics , it is often seen as the first comprehensive Catholic church history of modern times. Because of the "Gallican perspective", this work was indexed from 1684 to 1748. The work was distributed in thirteen editions by 1785.
