German builder award

The German Builders' Prize has been awarded every two years since 1986 by the German Association of Cities (represented by the GdW-BDA-DST Cooperation working group), the Association of German Architects and the GdW Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies .

The award goes to builders who, in cooperation with architects and engineers , have demonstrated their particular responsibility for the design, ecological and social quality of the buildings in the sense of a contribution to the building culture in cities and communities as well as their willingness to look for architectural solutions that go beyond the usual .

The submitted projects are assessed and evaluated according to the following criteria:

Eligible Participants

Eligible to participate are private and public builders, housing companies and cooperatives, municipalities, property developers as well as architects, urban planners and working groups representing the builders.

The projects submitted must be located in the Federal Republic of Germany and have been realized in the last five years before the award of the prize or must be nearing completion.

Categories

The prize was awarded in two categories until 2017:

  • New building: Innovative new building projects in residential construction were eligible.
  • Modernization: Residential buildings that had been modernized, rebuilt, supplemented and adapted to new living requirements were eligible.

Up to ten projects could be awarded in each category. In addition, the following special prizes were awarded:

Since 2018, the jury no longer differentiates between the categories of "new construction" and "modernization", but has divided it into eleven subject areas: revitalization of housing estates, conversion for living, building in difficult locations, building in community, urban repairs through residential construction, new residential areas, further construction of quarters, building for neighborhoods, conversion through new quarters, serial and modular building as well as small residential complexes.

Prices

The prices are immaterial, i. H. in the form of certificates. Bronze plaques to be affixed to the facade will be presented for the award-winning buildings.
