Julia Manchehner (born September 6, 1985 in Benediktbeuern ; † May 22, 2017 in Cesena , Emilia-Romagna , Italy ) was a German triathlete , long-distance runner and duathlon vice-world champion in long distance (2013, 2015).

Career

After running as a competitive sport from the age of 14, in 2004 she finished seventh at the Altötting half marathon in 1:23:59 h in her first competition over this distance, despite a break due to health problems . At the end of the year she was fourth overall and junior champion at the German Cross Country Championships and was then nominated for the 2004 European Cross Country Championships in Heringsdorf, where she contributed to fourth place in the German team with a 41st place. At the 2005 World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier, she finished 75th in the long distance.

In September 2005 she came third at the German championships in 10 km road running and also won the junior title here. She was then awarded the Young Talent Award by German Road Races .

In 2006 she was the German runner-up and junior champion in cross-country and half-marathons and came in 40th at the European Cross-Country Championships in San Giorgio su Legnano . The following year she won the Peuerbach New Year's Eve run .

In 2008 she was second in the half marathon and third in the cross country and 10,000 meter run at the German championships . At the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels , she came in 40th again, and in Peuerbach she was fourth.

German runner-up marathon 2009

In 2009 she started over the 42.195 km distance for the first time and was runner-up overall in the Gutenberg Marathon as the German runner-up in the marathon . Then she won the half marathon competition of the Cologne Marathon and the 10 km competition of the Munich Marathon . As in the previous year, she won the Darmstadt cross-country run, but suffered a stress fracture in the second metatarsal bone of the left foot. The consequences of this injury made well into the following season noticeable, the athlete is why as a cross-training swimming and cycling operating successfully in some triathlon participated Competitions. In 2011 the stress fracture broke out again.

Julia Manchehner first started for TSV Winhöring and moved to LG Passau in 2007 , where she was trained by Günter Zahn . After graduating from Maria-Ward-Gymnasium in Altötting , she completed a semester at Coastal Carolina University as a scholarship holder and then completed training as a curative nurse . She then completed a degree in health management at the DHfPG in Saarbrücken. Julia Manchehner grew up in Winhöring and then lived in Waldkraiburg .

In 2011 she moved to TSV Altenmarkt and started as a runner as well as a triathlete for Altenmarkt. From 2012 she was trained by Thomas Stecher, with whom she was also privately related.

Vice world champion Duathlon long distance 2013

In September 2013 she became Duathlon Vice World Champion on the long distance at Powerman Zofingen .

German champion mountain run 2014

At the Hochfellnberglauf she became German mountain running champion in September 2014.

After her then 27-year-old brother Raphael and her father Johann vielhner died on a mountain tour in New Zealand at the end of 2014 and have been missing since then, she originally planned to start the Hamburg Marathon , but had to cancel it again due to tendinitis.

In June 2015 she won the triathlon on the Olympic distance in Schliersee, the Alpine Triathlon (1.5 km swimming, 34 km cycling and 11 km running). In September she was able to repeat the success of 2013 and on her 30th birthday was again duathlon vice world champion in the long distance. In October she won the Munich Marathon with a personal best time .

At the end of 2015 he announced that he would start as a triathlon professional from the coming season. At the same time, she worked 10 to 15 hours a week in a Mühldorf fitness studio, where she had already completed the practical part of her studies.

German runner-up triathlon middle distance 2016

When she first started as a professional athlete, she finished third in the middle distance at the Challenge Rimini in Italy in May 2016 .
At the Challenge Heilbronn in June she became German runner-up in the triathlon middle distance. Due to the weather, the race had to be held as a duathlon (5 km running, 93 km cycling and 21.1 km running) but the DTU decided to make the result a German championship.

Accidental death in 2017

On May 15, 2017, while training on a winding mountain road near the Passo Monte delle Forche between Galeata and Strada San Zeno in the Apennines in Italy, Julia Vielfalthner was involved in a traffic accident with a truck and was seriously injured. She was transferred to the Ospedale Maurizio Bufalini in Cesena and placed in an artificial coma . There she succumbed to her injuries on May 22, 2017 at the age of 31.
