This triathlon is held over the Olympic distance - 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running.
In 1988 the first alpine triathlon took place at Spitzingsee with shortened routes (1 km swimming, 30 km cycling and 10 km running). In the following year, 1989, the competition was held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Sixtus factory .
In 1995 the event received official status for the first time as the venue for the Prestige Cup and in 1996 the Alpine Triathlon became the European Cup. In 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 the German Triathlon Union (DTU) held the German championships on the short distance here.
From 2010 to 2013 the event was called Garmin Alpine Triathlon (from 1988 to 1997 Sixtus Alpine Triathlon , 2005 to 2007 Sandoz Alpine Triathlonand 2008/2009 Hexal Alpine Triathlon ). Since 2014, Sixtus Werke Schliersee has been the title sponsor of the event, which has since been called Sixtus Schliersee Alpine Triathlon .
The course records are held by Lisa Nordén for women (2010: 02:14:17 hours) and Michael Raelert for men (2005: 01:59:28 hours).
On September 8, 2012, the Alpine triathlon was held for the 25th time. In June 2013 the Frenchman Laurent Vidal successfully defended his title from the previous year and in the 2013 season four races were held in the 1st Bundesliga:
In 2014, the Schliersee Alpine Triathlon was the third race of the cross-border combined classification as part of the AlpenASS - together with the Chiemsee Triathlon , the Trumer Triathlon and the Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon .
After the event in June 2015, Comunico GmbH, based in Bad Tölz, took over the Alpine Triathlon as the organizer, designed a new logo and redesigned the homepage for the event. The alpine triathlon is officially registered with the Bavarian Triathlon Association (BTV).
Also in 2016 the event was called "Sixtus Schliersee Alpentriathlon" and the 29th edition was again carried out on June 19th over the Olympic distance.
