German triathlon champion 2005
In 2005 Michael Raelert became German champion in the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) at Schliersee. The years 2006 and 2007 were overshadowed by health problems and in 2008 he was able to repeat the victory at the German championships.
In November 2009 he won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running) in Florida and set a new world record in the middle distance with his winning time of 3:34:04 h was only beaten in December 2018 by Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt at Ironman 70.3 Bahrain . His older brother Andreas Raelert (* 1976) is also an active triathlete and had achieved second place here last year.
In 2010 Michael Raelert was able to successfully defend his title in Florida. Michael Raelert starts for the EJOT Team TV Buschhütten . He lives in Rostock and studies political science and theology. He is trained by his brother Andreas, whom he has called his greatest role model since his youth. Michael Raelert uses bikes from the German bicycle manufacturer Cube on the bike course after the collaboration with Trek in 2010 and with BMC in 2014.
Raelert is characterized by consistently strong performances in all three sub-disciplines, but is regularly capable of best times, especially in the running section. On the running track, he uses models from the manufacturer K-Swiss due to the existing sponsorship . In the event that the first two places at the Ironman World Championship 2011 were taken by the Raelert brothers, the latter offered prize money of one million dollars.
Winner Ironman 70.3 European Championships 2010
Michael Raelert withdrew his acceptance to start his debut in the Ironman triathlon in Frankfurt am Main on July 24, 2011 due to a pelvic injury with muscular imbalances . In August he announced that he would not defend his title at Ironman 70.3 Germany 2011 in Wiesbaden due to injury and that he would not start in Hawaii this year. Instead, he aims to defend his previous win in September in Las Vegas.
In June 2012 he started on the Ironman distance in Regensburg (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) and finished second.
Winner Ironman 70.3 European Championships 2012
In August 2012, after 2010 in Wiesbaden, he again won the Ironman 70.3 European Championship (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running).
At the end of 2013 he had a knee operation and after a year of rest and regeneration, he announced his return to racing with a start at the Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl Challenge over the half distance (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running) in August 2014 where he finished third. After the Ironman 70.3 Rügen, Michael Raelert won another four Ironman 70.3 races as well as the Challenge Bahrain in December , where he was able to secure the prize money of 100,000 USD.
In May 2016, Michael Raelert had to cancel his planned start at Ironman France due to an illness with the Epstein-Barr virus .
Winner Ironman 70.3 European Championships 2017
In June 2017 he won the Ironman 70.3 European Championship for the third time.
In August 2019, the then 38-year-old collided with a car on a bike ride in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and broke his collarbone.
