Dirk Bockel (born October 18, 1976 in Waiblingen ) is a former German triathlete who has also had Luxembourg citizenship since 2005 .

Career

Dirk Bockel grew up in Germany, then studied in the United States and started for Luxembourg. He originally had German citizenship and since 2005 Luxembourgish citizenship . Bockel was trained by Michael Krueger.

In 2007 he won the Siegerland Triathlon .

2008 Summer Olympics

In 2008, he took part in the Olympic Games in triathlon over the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) and finished 25th in Beijing .

Vice-European Champion Long Distance 2009

In 2009 he was runner-up in the European long distance championship in Prague.

From January 2012 to 2014 Dirk Bockel was under contract with the Leopard-Trek Continental Team , which was also the first time in the history of triathlon that an athlete was part of a professional cycling team . In June 2012, he won his first Ironman distance victory in Regensburg (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

Winner Challenge Roth 2013

At the Challenge Roth in July 2013 he was able to win again on the long distance and with his winning time of 7:52 h, he set the fifth fastest time ever achieved on the long distance.

In 2014, after an injury, he decided not to start at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in October. Since 2014 he has been riding for the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon Team.

In February 2015 he was expelled from the Luxembourg Triathlon Federation after eight years. In June he suffered a double fatigue fracture in his foot. In January 2017, the then 40-year-old declared his career over due to his persistent foot injury.

Bockel was married from September 2005 to April 2017 and lived partly in St. Augustine (Florida, USA). His current place of residence is Ehnen in Luxembourg and he works as a consultant and commentator in the triathlon.
