The Ironman Melbourne (also Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship ) was a triathlon sporting event over the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) held from 2012 to 2015 in Melbourne , the capital of the state Victoria in Australia .

organization

The race offered amateurs 75 qualifying places for the Ironman World Championships in October, at the Ironman Hawaii .

The race was also advertised under the name Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship. Professional triathletes who fought for a total of 150,000 US dollars in prize money in Melbourne received 4,000 points for a win in the "Kona Points Ranking" - as well as in Ironman Germany (Ironman European Championship), Ironman South Africa (Ironman African Championship) , Ironman Texas (Ironman North American Championship) and Ironman Brasil (Ironman South American Championship).

The race first took place on March 25, 2012. At the first event, the Swiss Caroline Steffen achieved the second-fastest time ever achieved on the Ironman distance with her winning time of 8:34:51 h and a new partial world best time on the 180 km long bike course with 4:35:29 h. Craig Alexander was the first athlete in Australia to achieve a time of under eight hours with his winning time of 7:57:44 h. The two have held the course record here ever since.

Melbourne

At the second event in March 2013, the swimming distance had to be shortened due to adverse weather conditions.

In October 2015, the organizer informed World Triathlon Corporation that the competition would not be continued. The next event was originally announced for April 3, 2016 and then postponed to March 20. The official reason was a Formula 1 race in Melbourne at the same time . 65 of the 75 Hawaii slots are set to be awarded at the Ironman New Zealand , Ironman Cairns and Ironman Australia events in 2016 . Officials on site were irritated and stated that they had not been contacted by the WTC. The stated critical safety concerns were rejected and instead declining registrations were accepted as the real reason for cancellation.
