The Ironman Arizona is an annual triathlon sporting event over the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) held in Tempe , Arizona since 2005 .
organization
In April 2005 at the first edition, 1830 athletes competed here in order to secure one of the 80 starting places to be awarded at the Ironman World Championship, the Ironman Hawaii .
In 2008, the start date was moved from April to November - so two competitions were held this year. In 2009, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) took over the license to hold the Ironman in Arizona from the previous organizer North American Sports (NA Sports).
- 2010
The British Chrissie Wellington achieved a new world record within the Ironman series in November 2010 with her winning time of 8:36:13 hours, which she herself could beat in South Africa in April 2011. At the 2011 event, 2953 athletes were registered for the start, 808 of them women.
In 2014, 50 starting places for the Ironman World Championship 2015 in Kailua-Kona ( Ironman Hawaii ) were allocated here in the eleventh edition in the various age groups .
- 2016
On November 20, 2016, Lionel Sanders set a new course record with his winning time of 7:44:29 h and the fastest time ever achieved in an Ironman race ( undercut by Tim Don in 7:40:23 h in May 2017 ). The American Meredith Kessler scored her third win in a row.
The Canadian Lionel Sanders scored his third win in a row here in 2017. The last event was here on November 18, 2018.
