Julia Gajer (* 5. August 1982 in Hannover as Julia Mareike Wagner ) is a former German triathlete , duathlete and long-distance runner . She is two-time triathlon European champion in the middle distance (2012, 2016), German champion in the middle (2013, 2014, 2015) and long distance (2013, 2014, 2019), Ironman winner (2013, 2016) and second in the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt (2015) and is included in the best list of German triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

As a first grader, Julia Wagner started swimming in a club and continued to do so until she graduated from high school. Due to a study-related change of residence, she initially ended her sporting activities in the early days of her pharmacy studies. A college sports group that she went jogging with brought her back to regular training. Members of this running group motivated her to give triathlon a try. In 2007 Julia Wagner bought her first triathlon bike and completed her first duathlons. In 2008 she won her first triathlon on the Olympic distance in Heuchelberg. In the same year further victories followed on the Olympic distance at Schluchsee and on the middle distance at the Breisgau-Triathlon in Malterdingen.

In 2009, the pharmacist started her dissertation at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Freiburg. In addition, she won the marathon in Lucerne in 2:47 hours in 2010. Julia Wagner has been part of the Erdinger alcohol-free team since 2010 . In 2011 she started the Ironman distance for the first time in Roth. In 8:56:23 h - the second fastest time that a German had ever achieved at this distance worldwide - she came second. Three months later she finished second in the Munich Marathon in 2:47:42 h .

Triathlon professional since 2012

At the end of 2011, she completed her doctorate and in November 2011 married Markus Gajer , who temporarily worked as a postdoc at the same institute where she did her doctorate and who is also an enthusiastic triathlete. She has been living in Ditzingen, a suburb of Stuttgart, since 2012 and - apart from working a few hours a week in a pharmacy - competes as a full-time professional in the triathlon under her new name Julia Gajer .

European triathlon champion middle distance 2012

In May 2012, Gajer in St. Pölten, Austria - became the second German athlete after Sandra Wallenhorst (2009) - to win the middle distance and in June she became European triathlon champion in the middle distance.

In June 2013 Julia Gajer became German champion in the triathlon middle distance in Kraichgau and in July in Roth also in the long distance. In November, she achieved her first victory on the Ironman distance in Tempe (Arizona) , and in 8:52:49 h she was able to beat the magic nine-hour mark for the fourth time - more often than any other German so far.

In June 2014 she was able to repeat her success in Kraichgau and again became German champion in the middle distance. In July 2014, she also succeeded in repeating the long distance in Roth. In October, she started at the Ironman World Championship for the first time and came sixth and fastest German after 9:16:58 h straight away in the prize money.

From her first triathlon activities until autumn 2014, Julia Gajer was trained by Jochen Frech. Since then she has been looked after by the former U-23 national coach Wolfram Bott , who is currently the Luxembourg national coach and, in addition to Gajer, for example. In June 2015, in Kraichgau, she won the German championship in the middle distance for the third time in a row. In May 2019, the then 36-year-old finished third at Ironman 70.3 Austria after a maternity break . In July 2019 she made her comeback after a two-year injury and baby break with third place in the long distance at the Ironman Hamburg .

Julia Gajer lives in Austria , near Kufstein . In November, she declared her active career to end at the end of the 2019 season.
