Sophia Saller (born March 20, 1994 in Munich ) is a former German triathlete . She is triathlon U23 world champion of the year 2014, runner-up European champion on the Olympic short distance (2014) and German triathlon champion on the sprint distance (2014).
Career
Sophia Saller was born in Bavaria and initially lived for seven years in the Ruhr area and in Franconia. When her family moved to Great Britain in 2008 for professional reasons, she switched to the German School in London , where she passed her Abitur (average grade 1.0) at the age of seventeen - she had skipped the second grade. She completed her subsequent studies in mathematics at St. Catherine's College at the University of Oxford in June 2015 with first-class honors as a Master of Science degree . Sophia Saller lived in Oxford and began her dissertation in combinatorics at the University of Oxford in October 2015 , which she graduated in 2019. In September 2015 she was the first German triathlete to be awarded the “Sports Scholarship Holder of the Year”. Since March 2020 she has been working at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence in Saarbrücken .
She started for the club SC Delphin Ingolstadt and in the Triathlon Bundesliga for the EJOT Team TV Buschhütten and was designed by Roland Knoll trained.
German junior champion triathlon 2013
In 2013 she won the German Junior Triathlon Championship. With the subsequent tenth place at the Junior World Championships in London, Saller was accepted into the U23 B squad of the DTU , which she also belonged to in 2015.
U23 world champion triathlon 2014
In June 2014 she became vice European champion on the Olympic short distance in the elite class and also second with the German team - together with Hanna Philippin , Justus Nieschlag and Maximilian Schwetz . In August she became U23 world champion on the Olympic short distance in Canada.
She finished the triathlon world championship racing series in 2015 as the third best German in 20th place. In the two-year qualification period for a starting place at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games , Sophia Saller achieved the fifth-best placement of the German athletes on the ITU Olympic qualification list in 50th place, but did not meet the sporting qualification criteria agreed by the DTU and DOSB .
In 2018 she was accepted as one of eight athletes in the perspective team (PK) of the German Triathlon Union (DTU). At the T3 triathlon in Düsseldorf , she suffered an injury to her foot in July 2018. In the annual ranking of the ITU World Championship Series 2018 , she finished 61st as the second best German after the last race in Australia in September.
At the beginning of 2020, the 25-year-old declared her active career over.
