timeline
WTS 2014 WTS 2016

The World Championship Series 2015 is a triathlon racing series over the "short distance" or "Olympic triathlon distance". It is organized by the international triathlon association ITU ( International Triathlon Union ).

organization

The distances for these races are 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running (Olympic distance). This world series has been organized annually by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) since 1989 . In the 2015 season, nine races and the final in September took place in Chicago.

A new addition is the race in Abu Dhabi, the first competition in the Middle East and the main competition on the sprint distance (0.5 km swimming, 20 km cycling and 5 km running) will be held here. There is also a race on the Olympic distance and the maxi distance (2 km swimming, 80 km cycling and 20 km running).

Rating

In addition to the ten races of the world series, the other races of the ITU World Cup are also taken into account for the annual ranking of the world championship:
At the final in Chicago in September there are 1200 points for a win and in the other nine races of the world series there are 800 points for a win Points. In a normal ITU World Cup, however, there are only 300 points. Every further placement in these races receives a fixed number of points.

The five best results of the world series, the last final race and a maximum of two World Cup races are taken into account for the annual ranking.

qualification

Each national umbrella association can nominate up to six male and female athletes for each competition in the series, the host association up to eight. The notification must be made to the ITU at least 33 days before the competition. Based on the placement of the registered athletes on the ITU Points List, the ITU compiles the starting fields of 60 male and 60 female athletes. In addition, five invitations can be issued. In contrast to the World Championship Ranking, the ITU Points List also includes other competitions such as B. U23 world championships, continental championships and cup events and student world championships.

Prize money

The series will pay out a total of US $ 2.385 million in prize money: US $ 150,000 per competition, US $ 280,000 for the Grand Final, US $ 140,000 for the World Championship in Mixed Relay and a bonus pool of US $ 755,000 for the World Championship. The fastest men and women each receive US $ 18,000 per competition in the series, US $ 7,500 per World Cup victory and US $ 30,000 at the Grand Final in Cozumel, the world champion and the world champion receive a further US $ 80,000, prize money up to 35th place.

Results

The US-American and later world champion Gwen Jorgensen had an outstanding performance this season: She was able to win all of her seven starts in ten races.
Javier Gómez started eight times and he was always able to place in the top three (2 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze).

In the fourth race of the series in Cape Town on April 25th and 26th, the swimming distance had to be shortened from 1500 to 750 m in the race for women and men because of the cold water temperature.

As the strongest nation, the Spanish athletes were able to secure fifteen medal places in 2015. After the ten races of the racing series, the United States team was able to secure sixteen of the thirty possible medals for women - but not a single one for men.
Nicola Spirig won a bronze medal for Switzerland in the fourth race in Cape Town. Besides her, however, no other athlete from the German-speaking countries was able to achieve a top three placement in the men or women this season.
