João José Sales Henriques de Carvalho Pereira (born December 28, 1987 in Alhandra ) is a Portuguese triathlete . He is European triathlon champion on the sprint and short distance (2017) and member of the national team. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he finished fifth.

Career

João Pereira has been running triathlon since 2008. In the national ranking for 2009, Pereira was ranked fourth (U23), but he only took part in two of the four Portuguese competitions. In 2010, Pereira was number six in the elite ranking.

In May 2016 he finished sixth at the European Triathlon Championships. He won the European Championship on the Olympic short distance in Kitzbühel in June 2017.

2016 Summer Olympics

João Pereira qualified for a place at the 2016 Summer Olympics and on August 18, he competed with João Silva and Miguel Arraiolos in Rio de Janeiro for Spain, where he finished fifth as the best Portuguese.

Triathlon European champion sprint and short distance 2017

In May 2017 he was able to win the Challenge Lisboa in the middle distance . In June he became European champion in the Olympic short distance in Kitzbühel - just one second ahead of second and four seconds ahead of third. Only a week later he was also European champion on the sprint distance in Düsseldorf.

In June 2019, the then 31-year-old was runner-up in triathlon European championship on the Olympic short distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) in the Netherlands behind Alistair Brownlee .
