Alhandra is a municipality ( freguesia ) and small town ( Vila ) in the district of Vila Franca de Xira . The community is 2.3 km² and has 6049 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

It is believed that it was founded during the time of the Moorish administration in the 8th century. The place, which was previously called Torre Negra (German: Black Tower), received its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1203. Alhandra was an independent district until 1855, when it was attached to the concelho of Vila Franca de Xira.

Alhandra was part of the Linhas de Torres Vedras line of fortifications against the Napoleonic invasion forces under General Massena . Major battles took place here in 1810.

Since the middle of the 19th century, a number of industrial companies have settled here, including the textile industry and various companies in the food industry, due to the productive agriculture (including rice) and livestock (wool) in the municipality. The cement factory founded in 1894 (today Cimpor ) was characteristic of the place .
