José Tomás de Sousa Martins (born March 7, 1843 in Alhandra , † August 18, 1897 ibid) was a Portuguese doctor and university professor of medicine . He gained notoriety for his commitment to public health , especially the fight against tuberculosis . In his homeland he is widely venerated as a saint, but his cult is not recognized by the Catholic Church .
