Helena Margarida dos Santos Costa (born April 15, 1978 in Alhandra , Vila Franca de Xira ) is a former Portuguese soccer player and today's coach.
Life
Short playing career
Costa played alongside school for the Alhandra Sporting Club youth teams when she was young, before retiring due to injury at the age of 21.
Coaching career
After retiring, Costa began training as a trainer with the C license at the renowned Faculdade de Motricidade Humana in Linda-a-Velha . After completing her coaching training, she worked at Benfica Lisbon and coached various youth teams of the club between 1997 and 2010. In addition to her work in the youth sector at Benfica, she trained a men's senior team for the first time in 2005/2006 and won the Taça de Honra de Lisboa with the Sociedade Recreativa Desportiva Cheleirense . After the championship with Cheleirense, she left the club and coached the women's team SU 1º Dezembro in the Campeonato Nacional from 2006 to 2008 . Costa stayed for two years and then coached league rivals FC Odivelas in the 2008/2009 season . In March 2010 she was appointed national coach of the Qatari national soccer team for women and worked for the Qatari soccer association until October 2010. In October 2010 she left the Qatari federation and became the national coach of Iran's women's national team. In May 2014 the French men's Ligue 2 club signed Clermont Foot Costa as the new coach for the 2014/2015 season. After the Italian Carolina Morace and the Bolivian Nelfi Ibañez Guerra (in Peru at Hijos de Acosvinchos - Peruvian Segunda División ) she would have been the third woman to coach a men's professional football team. On June 24, 2014, however, she announced that for personal reasons she would not start the job as coach of the Ligue 2 club. She terminated her contract, which came into force on July 1. Clermont Foot then hired the former French international Corinne Diacre as coach.
Career as a scout
In addition to her coaching career, she worked as a scout for the club Leixões SC and between 2008 and 2010 for the Scottish Premier League club Celtic Glasgow . Since July 1, 2017, she has been part of the scouting team of Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt .
