Katie Zaferes (* 9. June 1989 in Baltimore as Katie Hursey ) is an American triathlete and reigning world champion in the triathlon short distance (2019).

Career

Triathlon professional since 2013

Katie Hursey started as a triathlon professional in 2013. She has been married to triathlete Tommy Zaferes since January 2014 . She finished the 2014 season with 16th place in the Triathlon World Championship.

She started in the US national triathlon team in the 2015 season and in March she finished second both in the opening race of the world championship series in Abu Dhabi and in the second race of the current annual championship in New Zealand.
The Triathlon World Championship race series in 2015 about ten races she finished in fifth place and it was triathlon in September third in the state championship.

2016 Summer Olympics

In July 2016 she was able to win her first race in the ITU World Championship racing series on the sprint distance in Hamburg. Katie Zaferes qualified for a place at the Summer Olympics, she started in Rio de Janeiro for the USA on August 20 and finished in 18th place.

In September she finished thirteenth in the last race of the season, fourth in the annual ranking of the ITU World Championship on the short distance triathlon.

In Japan, she finished second in the third race of the 2017 world championship series in May 2017, taking the lead in the annual standings. Your trainer is Joel Filliol . In July 2017, the then 28-year-old became vice world champion in mixed relay (mixed relay) in Hamburg with the American team. After the last race in September, she finished the 2017 world championship series as the best American woman in third place.

She was runner-up in the 2018 World Championship racing series in September 2018 . In August 2019, the 30-year-old became world champion in the short distance triathlon in Lausanne with her fifth victory in the eighth and final race of the current racing series ( ITU World Championship Series 2019 , Grand Final ).

With $ 347,500 in prize money, Katie Zaferes was the top-earning female triathlete of the 2019 season.
