The ITU World Championship Series 2016 is a triathlon racing series with competitions over the Olympic distance and the sprint distance as well as a relay competition ( mixed relay ). It is held under the care of the international triathlon association ITU ( International Triathlon Union ). The winner of the series ranking will be honored as triathlon world champion.

organization

This world series has been held annually since 2009 under the supervision of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), and from 1989 to 2008 the world champions were determined in a single competition.

On the Olympic distance the competitions consist of 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running, on the sprint distance of 750 m swimming, 20 km cycling and 5 km running. In elite competitions, drafting (cycling in the slipstream) is generally permitted . In the case of the popular sports competitions organized in the framework program, however, there is a drafting ban, i. H. every athlete must keep a distance of at least 12 m from the athlete in front on the bike course.

In the 2016 season, eight races and the final in September were held in Mexico. Races were held in Leeds for the first time in 2016 and it replaces London . In 2016, the series had the second highest number of competitions since 2009. The only competition that is part of the series every year is the ITU World Triathlon Hamburg , where the world champions in mixed relay were honored for the fourth time in a row in 2016 were. In this format, the teams are made up of two women and two men, each member completing a super sprint of 250 m swimming, 6.6 km cycling and 1.6 km running one after the other. The format is part of the Youth Olympic Games and was included in the 2013 Summer Olympic Games program.

With the acquisition of the endurance division of Lagardère Sports and Entertainment by the WTC , a subsidiary of the Chinese Dalian Wanda Group , the majority of the competitions will now be organized by a single organizer for the first time in the history of the series. Already last year was awarded the ITU World Triathlon Gold Coast for the first time a competition of the series of the WTC, which includes the rights to the trademark Ironman holds and u. a. The organizer of the Ironman Hawaii is. Since the WTC also organizes the competitions in Hamburg, Abu Dhabi, Cape Town, Leeds and Stockholm with the takeover, six of the nine competitions in the series will be realized by a single organizer.

Rating

For the annual ranking of the world championship, in addition to the nine races of the world series, the other races of the ITU World Cup are also taken into account:

  • At the finals in Cozumel in September there are 1200 points for a win and in the other nine races of the world series there are 800 points for a win.
In a normal ITU World Cup, however, there are only 300 points. Every further placement in these races receives a fixed number of points.
  • The five best results of the world series, the last final race and a maximum of two World Cup races are taken into account for the annual ranking.

The competitions up to and including May 15 counted in addition to those of the previous year since May 14, 2015 for the Olympic Qualification List, which was used to determine the number of starting places per nation at the 2016 Olympic Games . The nominations of the athletes took place according to individual criteria of the NOKs , whereby the results of the series were also often taken into account.

qualification

Each national umbrella association can nominate up to six male and female athletes for each competition in the series, the host association up to eight. The notification must be made to the ITU at least 33 days before the competition. Based on the placement of the registered athletes on the ITU Points List, the ITU compiles the starting fields of 60 male and 60 female athletes. In addition, five invitations can be issued. In contrast to the World Championship Ranking, the ITU Points List also includes other competitions such as B. U23 world championships, continental championships and cup events and student world championships.

Prize money

A total of US $ 2.385 million in prize money was paid out in the series: US $ 150,000 per competition, US $ 280,000 for the Grand Final, US $ 140,000 for the World Mixed Relay Championship and a bonus pool of US $ 755,000 for the World Championship . The fastest men and women each receive US $ 18,000 per competition in the series, US $ 7,500 per World Cup win and US $ 30,000 at the Grand Final in Cozumel, while the world champion and the world champion receive an additional US $ 80,000. Prize money was paid up to 35th place.

Mario Mola - Triathlon World Champion on the short distance (2016 and 2017)

The Spaniard Mario Mola won the 2016 World Championship with fifth place in the last race.
In the annual standings he was four points ahead of the Briton Jonathan Brownlee : While in the lead in the
Grand Final in Mexico, only 400 meters from the finish, he suffered an attack of weakness. His brother Alistair caught him and “supported” him across the finish line. A protest brought in by the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI, Federación Español de Triatlón) immediately after the race was rejected.
