Ai Ueda ( Japanese 上 田 藍 , Ueda Ai ; born October 26, 1983 in Kyoto , Kyoto Prefecture ) is a Japanese duathlete and triathlete . She is a three-time Olympian (2008, 2012, 2016), Duathlon World Champion (2013) and Vice-World Champion Duathlon (2018).

Career

Ai Ueda's parents and brother are kimono artists - she moved to Chiba in 2002 immediately after graduating from school to devote herself entirely to triathlon. Ai Ueda has been a professional triathlete since 2003. In 2005 she became the Asian triathlon champion in the U23 age group.

2008 Summer Olympics

She represented Japan at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and finished 17th. Four years later, she also started in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she finished 39th.

In 2013 she became Duathlon World Champion in Colombia on the short distance (10 km run, 40 km bike ride and 5 km run). She also became national triathlon champion and was able to repeat this success in October 2015. In 2014 she became national champion in the short distance duathlon. In 2015 she became the Asian triathlon champion and in April 2016 she was able to repeat this success.

2016 Summer Olympics

Ai Ueda was also able to qualify for a place at the Summer Olympics for the third time in 2016. It started on August 20th in Rio de Janeiro, where it finished 39th for Japan.
In September, with her fifth place in the last race of the season, she finished third in the annual ranking of the world championship on the short distance triathlon.

In 2017, she finished 15th in the ITU World Championship racing series.

In July 2018, Ai Ueda became ITU Vice World Champion Duathlon.
In the 2018 World Championship racing series, she finished 29th as the third best Japanese woman. In October Ueda was elected to the ITU's athletes' committee for two years .
