Vanessa de Sousa Fernandes (born September 14, 1985 in Perosinho , Vila Nova de Gaia ) is a Portuguese cyclist and triathlete . She is European triathlon champion (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008), world triathlon champion (2007) and world duathlon champion (2007, 2008).
Athletic career
Vanessa Fernandes comes from a sporty family. Her father is the former cyclist Venceslau Fernandes - winner of the Tour of Portugal in 1984.
She first took part in a triathlon in 1999 as a 14-year-old. Fernandes joined the Belenenses Lisbon association and was able to celebrate her first international successes after just three years. She has been a member of the Benfica Lisbon Sports Club since 2005 . Fernandes has been European Junior Champion once (2002), three times U23 European Champion (2004, 2005 and 2006) and five times in a row European Champion in the elite category (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) over the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming) , 40 km cycling and 10 km running).
2004 Summer Olympics
At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , she was eighth. In 2006 Fernandes won the World Cup of the International Triathlon Union and was voted Portugal's Sportswoman of the Year.
Her greatest success so far is winning the gold medal at the Triathlon World Championship 2007 in Hamburg . In addition, Fernandes was three times world and once European champion in the duathlon .
2008 Summer Olympics
She won the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing .
In 2010 Vanessa Fernandes was two-time Portuguese cycling champion, in road races and in the individual time trial .
In 2011, she announced a longer break from sport for health reasons. After Athens and Beijing, their goal was a third start at the 2016 Olympic Games.
At her second start in the middle distance, the then 31-year-old won the Ironman 70.3 Cascais in September 2017 .
