Lucy Charles-Barclay (born September 15, 1993 as Lucy Anne Charles ) is a British triathlete . She is a two-time winner of the "Challenge The Championship" (World Championship; 2017, 2018), three-time Ironman winner (2017, 2018, 2019), winner of the Ironman European Championships (2017) and second at the Ironman Hawaii (2017, 2018, 2019) ). She has been on the best list of British triathletes on the Ironman distance since 2018 .

Career

Lucy Charles started swimming at the age of eight and was a national champion at the age of 16. As a 19-year-old, she started her first triathlon. In 2015 she became U23 World Champion Ironman 70.3 in Zell am See and in October in Kona she also became Ironman World Champion for amateurs in the age group F18-24. She has started as a triathlon professional since 2016.

Lucy Charles is married and lives in Hatfield, Hertfordshire . She is trained by her husband.

Winner of the Challenge World Championships 2017

In May 2017 she won the oldest European Ironman on Lanzarote and in June she won the first “Challenge The Championship” (World Championship) in the middle distance.

Second Ironman Hawaii and Ironman Germany 2017

In July 2017 she was second behind the Australian Sarah Crowley at Ironman Germany and was able to win the Ironman European Championships . She finished the swim in Frankfurt as the fastest athlete after 48:29 minutes and reached the finish line in second, just under four minutes behind Sarah Crowley. In October she finished second at the Ironman Hawaii after being the fastest swimmer only to be overtaken by the Swiss and later winner Daniela Ryf at the end of the bike course .

In April 2018, the then 24-year-old won her second Ironman race with the Ironman South Africa . In June she was named as one of the strongest swimmers on the long distance.

Winner of the Challenge World Championships 2018

In June 2018, after 2017, she again won the Challenge The Championship in the middle distance in Slovakia . In September she finished second at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in South Africa. At Ironman Hawaii in October, she finished second and set a new course record in the swimming distance in 48:13 minutes.

Winner Challenge Roth 2019

At Challenge Roth , with her winning time of 8:31:09 hours, she took first place with a new personal best in the long distance after finishing second in the previous year in July 2019. In October, the 26-year-old finished second in the Ironman Hawaii for the third time in a row. After she had finished swimming as the fastest and had been in the lead for a long time, she was overtaken by the German Anne Haug on the final run .

With $ 170,472 in prize money, Lucy Charles-Barclay was the second-highest- earning female triathlete of the 2019 season (behind the American Katie Zaferes , $ 347,500 in prize money).
