Banyoles (span. Bañolas) is a Catalan city in the province of Girona in northeastern Spain . It is the capital of the Comarca Pla de l'Estany .
Geographical location
Banyoles is about 15 kilometers north of Girona .
Worth seeing
The city is known for its lake Estany de Banyoles (tourist center and water sports). On October 8, 1998, a tour boat carrying 141 French tourists sank on Lake Banyoles. The accident claimed 22 lives and 38 injured.
The city has an old town from the 13th and 14th centuries. Archaeological finds from the area are exhibited in the "Museu Arqueologic Comarcal" archaeological museum. There is also the Museu Darder.
La Draga , a wetland settlement of the late Cardial culture or early Epi-Cardial, was discovered in Banyoles in 1990 .
Rowing
Banyoles has been known to rowers since the 1992 Olympic Games , when the Olympic regatta was held there. Since then, Banyoles has been a popular training area for numerous top European teams. In 2004 the World Rowing Championships were held in Banyoles.
Triathlon
The premium European Cup competitions (even a World Cup in 2012) in triathlon are held in Banyoles every year, and Carolina Routier , the 2011 Spanish triathlon champion, comes from Banyoles.
