The Estany de Banyoles ( Lake of Banyoles ) is a lake in northeastern Catalonia . It is significant as a tourist destination and as a water sports center.

geography

The lake is named after the town of Banyoles , on whose territory it lies. It is located in the Comarca of Pla de l'Estany , Girona province , Catalonia . With the western bank it borders on the municipality of Porqueres .

The lake is about 2,100 meters long from north to south and a maximum of 750 meters wide. It has an area of ​​1.12 km². Its average depth is 15 meters and the deepest point is 46.4 meters. The lake lies in a depression and therefore has no drainage. It has a number of small tributaries.

Attractions

The Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Porqueres is located on the west bank in the area of ​​the municipality of Porqueres .

Flora and fauna

The lake is home to both native and introduced species of fish, such as carp , rudd , freshwater blimp , sunfish , tench , largemouth bass and eel . Other fish species such as pike , black pygmy catfish and goldfish were introduced in the 19th century, but past research has not found any specimens of these species.

water sports

Lake Banyoles became known as the venue for the rowing competitions of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and the 2004 World Rowing Championships . It is also a popular training location for many foreign, especially English rowers.

On October 8, 1998, a tour boat carrying 141 French tourists sank on Lake Banyoles. The accident claimed 22 lives and 38 injured.
