Alistair Edward Brownlee (born April 23, 1988 in Dewsbury , Yorkshire) is a British duathlete , triathlete , two-time triathlon world champion on the short distance (2009, 2011), two-time Olympic champion (2012, 2016), aquathlon world champion (2016) and two-time Ironman winner (2019). He is on the best list of British triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

His father was a runner, his mother a swimmer and he got into triathlon through his uncle. Brownlee now lives in Horsforth, Leeds . His younger brother Jonathan Brownlee is also active as a triathlete. The two were BT (British Telecom) ambassadors of the Olympic 2012 project.

In 2006 and again in 2007 he was duathlon vice world champion in the junior division. In 2008 Brownlee won the U23 World Cup and finished 12th at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

World champion triathlon short distance 2009

In 2009 Alistair Brownlee won the world championship series with superiority and was first in almost all sub-competitions (Madrid, Washington DC, Kitzbühel, London and Gold Coast). In 2010, Alistair Brownlee won the European Elite Championship, but then suffered from a fatigue fracture in his thigh.

In 2011 Brownlee returned with strong performances and clearly dominated the top races: In Madrid and Kitzbühel he was again first in a row, the European Championship he and his brother Jonathan clearly won the European championship as Vice-European Champion and again the title of the triathlon Get world champions on the Olympic distance.

2012 Summer Olympics winner

In August 2012, he won the gold medal at the London Olympics and his brother Jonathan finished third.

In the ITU World Championship Series 2015 he finished 14th.

Winner of the 2016 Summer Olympics

Alistair Brownlee qualified again for a place at the Olympic Games in 2016 and he started in Brazil for Great Britain - together with Helen Jenkins , Non Stanford and Vicky Holland , Gordon Benson and his brother Jonathan . On August 18, he won his second Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro and was the first athlete to successfully defend an Olympic victory. His brother came in second.
In September he became aquathlon world champion in Mexico. In the last race of the 2016 World Championship racing series, he finished third in Mexico and thus finished tenth in the annual ranking.

Brownlee starts in the squad of the British Triathlon Federation and since 2017 for the 13-member " Bahrain Elite Endurance Triathlon Team ". In April 2017 he won the Challenge Gran Canaria at his first start in the middle distance (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running) in Spain .

In April 2019 he finished second behind the German Andreas Dreitz at the Ironman 70.3 Marbella in Spain . In June, the then 31-year-old was able to win the triathlon European championship on the Olympic short distance for the fourth time in the Netherlands. In June 2019, he won his first Ironman race at the inaugural Ironman Ireland .

In March 2020, he finished third at the European Duathlon Championships in Spain.
