Greg Welch (born January 1, 1966 in Campsie / Sydney as Gregory John Welch ) is a former Australian duathlete and triathlete . He is multiple world champion (1990, 1993 and 1996) and winner of the Ironman World Championships (1994).

Career

He was one of the best triathletes of the 1990s and also won the “Grand Slam” consisting of the Olympic Distance Triathlon World Championships (1990), Duathlon World Championships (1993), Ironman World Championship (1994) and the Long Course Triathlon World Championships (1996).

World champion triathlon short distance 1990

In September 1990 Greg Welch became the ITU triathlon world champion on the short distance in Orlando (Florida) (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running).

In 1993 he was the first Australian to claim this title at the fourth duathlon world championship in Dallas.

Winner Ironman Hawaii 1994

The Australian Greg Welch was the first non-US-American to win the 18th edition of the Ironman Hawaii after 8:20:27 h on October 15, 1994. He was trained by Brett Sutton .

In September 1996 he became ITU world champion on the long distance triathlon. In the spring of 1997, as part of a routine examination, the blood disease hemochromatosis was diagnosed, which forced him to take a break. In November he finished third at the ITU Triathlon World Championship on the short distance in Perth (Australia).

In May 1999 he finished third in the Oceanic Triathlon Championship. At the end of the year he had to end his professional career after a cardiac arrhythmia ( ventricular tachycardia ) was diagnosed.

Grew Welch is married to former professional triathlete Sian Welch and lives with her and their two daughters in San Diego . He trained various athletes, such as the former Australian triathlete Kate Major .

Awards

  • In 2004 he was inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame by the organizer of Ironman Hawaii as its first non-American winner .
  • Greg Welch was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) in 2014 in recognition of his athletic achievements .
