Sian Welch (* 14 June 1966 in Encinitas as Sian Williams ) is a former American triathlete , National Triathlon Champion (1997) and Ironman -Siegerin (1998).
Career
She has been married to former Australian professional triathlete Greg Welch (* 1966) since 1993 . She was trained by Brett Sutton .
In 1994 she won the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco . In November 1996, she was third in Hawaii at the Cross Triathlon World Championship.
In 1997 she became the national short distance triathlon champion.
Ironman Hawaii 1997
In October 1997, she fought a thrilling duel with her compatriot Wendy Ingraham for fourth place on the home stretch of Ironman Hawaii , when the two of them were dehydrated and exhausted and were only able to crawl to the finish on all fours. Sian Welch finished fifth in this competition.
Ironman winner 1998
In April 1998, the then 31-year-old won the Ironman Australia . In 2000 Sian Welch ended her professional career - three months after her husband Greg announced his resignation.
Ironman Hawaii 2017
In February 2017 she announced that 20 years after her spectacular finish ("The Crawl") she wanted to start again in Kona this year. The then 50-year-old Sian started after more than ten years of racing in April at the Ironman 70.3 Liuzhou in China and was able to qualify again as the winner of her age group for a starting place at the Ironman Hawaii in October.
