Ironman 70.3 St. Croix
The Ironman 70.3 St. Croix is a former triathlon competition of the Ironman 70.3 series on Saint Croix , the largest of the American Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. The route extends over the entire approx. 45 km long and 11 km wide island of St. Croix. The Ironman 70.3 trademark is derived from the total distance of the route of 70.3 miles (corresponding to 113 km, divided into 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running).
organization
In 1988 the St. Croix International Triathlon was organized for the first time, the distances in 1988 and 1989 were 3 km swimming, 95 km cycling and 20 km running. From 1991 the length of the route was 2 km swimming, 55 km cycling and 12 km running. In 2000 the triathlon served as a qualifying competition for Ironman Canada , Ironman USA and Ironman California . In 2001 the name of the event was changed to St. Croix Half-Ironman and the length of the course changed to 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running. A qualification for the Ironman Hawaii was now possible at the competition . In the 1990s, the St. Croix Triathlon also served as a qualifying competition for the Ironman Hawaii.
Since 2006, the newly created trademark Ironman 70.3 of the WTC , a current subsidiary of the Chinese Dalian Wanda Group, has been used in the event name, instead of starting places for the Ironman Hawaii, the fastest athletes in their age groups can start places for one organized by the WTC and under the name Ironman 70.3 World Championship advertised event. Formally, this is not a world championship awarded by an international sports association : The WTC derived the right to use the term World Championship from a trademark registered in 1981. In 2006 the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed that an agreement reached in 1998 between the global umbrella organization ITU and the WTC also applies to their new trademark Ironman 70.3 .
The triathlon is organized by a group related to local tourism. In contrast to most competitions in North America, there is an organizer that is independent of the WTC and that only pays these fees for the use of their trademarks in the event name.
The event is also advertised with the slogan “Beauty and the Beast”. This alludes to the contrast between the Caribbean postcard panorama along the route and the demanding route. The biggest challenge on the bike course is a climb called "the Beast" after 33 km, with around 180 meters of altitude to be mastered at 1,100 meters, the steepest section has a 21% incline. The running route runs over two laps and contains some challenging cross sections. Because of its demanding course, the triathlon is one of the world's most challenging over this distance.
At this triathlon 30 places will be awarded for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.
In addition to the main competition over the middle distance, the event also included a sprint triathlon over 750 km swimming, 14 km cycling and 7 km running. The last event here was in 2017 and no further races were announced for 2018.
