Andrew Robert "Andy" Potts (born December 28, 1976 in Hershey , Pennsylvania ) is an American triathlete , seven-time Ironman winner (2010-2016) and US champion in the short distance (2007) and middle distance (2014). He is included in the best list of American triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

Potts originally began his athletic career as a swimmer . From 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the US national swimming team. His greatest success was in 1995 when he won the bronze medal in the 400 meter medley at the Summer Universiade in Fukuoka . In 1996, he just missed qualifying for the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta in the national elimination matches - the so-called "Trials" - finishing fourth over the same distance . In 1998/99 he was the captain of the University of Michigan swimming team , where he studied English . For reasons of age, he then turned to athletics and finally to triathlon in 2003 with the aim of still being able to compete in the Olympic Games.

In his first season he made it into the top 100 of the ITU's world rankings with good placements at World Cup events .

2004 Summer Olympics

With an eleventh place at the world championships held in Madeira , he qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . At the Olympic competition in Vouliagmeni he was in the lead after swimming, but then fell back and finished the race in 22nd place. The post-Olympic year he finished ninth in the World Cup ranking.

In 2006 he became a team world champion as a member of the US national triathlon team.

State champion triathlon short distance 2007

The 2007 season began with winning the US championship for the first time. In July 2007 he won the competition at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and two months later he was the best US American in eleventh place at the World Cup in Hamburg . He ended the season by winning the Ironman 70.3 World Championship .

With his victory at the Pan American Games, Potts was automatically qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , where he did not start.

Ironman winner 2010

In 2010, he scored his first long-distance win at the Ironman in Idaho (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

In May 2014 he became the US national champion in the triathlon middle distance. He finished fourth at the Ironman Hawaii in October. In October 2015 he finished fourth at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, as in the previous year.

Fourth world championship long distance 2017

In August 2017, the then 40-year-old finished fourth in the world championships on the long-distance triathlon (4 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 30 km running). At the Ironman Hawaii in October , he finished seventh behind the winner, the German Patrick Lange , 13:03 minutes . He was named the strongest long distance swimmer in June 2018. At the Ironman Hawaii 2018, he finished eighth.

In May 2019 the 42-year-old won the [Ironman Brazil] in Florianópolis with a new personal best in 8:02:58 h on the long distance .

Potts has been married to former Canadian gymnast Lisa Simes since January 30, 2004 and they both live in Colorado Springs .
